Default Notifications Demo confusion

Please Login to Remove!

I'm new to BB programming so I thought I would start by using the BB notifications demo app which is supposed to show how to use the API to do various things, but I can't even figure out how to use the app in the BB simulator.

When I run it and I get the window that says to run the event from the menu...I pull up the menu and click whatever it says to generate a notify ID1, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing next. I don't see anything else happen and don't know if I'm supposed to simulate some sort of incoming event that the app will respond to.

I'm trying to find a skeleton app I can learn from and thought that one would do it but I'm lost so I wonder if anyone knows what I'm supposed to do with that app, or can point me to a straightforward code example.

My goal is I want to wait for a certain event like a call or bbm message or email and then when that's detected, generate my own alert like a custom LED color/pattern based on the event. I just want something simple for now to get started so I can learn on my own but I'm stuck.

Any idea where I should turn?
