Default Web Services (JSR 172) Support for Blackberry 7100

Please Login to Remove!

I posted this in another forum but it's more relevant here:

If I write a J2ME MIDlet application which is a client for web services, would I be able to run it on an out-of-the-box Blackberry 7100 without any additional software being installed first.

For MIDlets to be web service clients, the Java version that's running on the device must have an implementation of the JSR 172 specification.

Has anybody successfully deployed a web service client on a Blackberry using this spec?

You can't use JSR-172 on a BB. The security model on the device will not allow you to import into the java.* namespace. Trust me, I went through this with RIM. This was before they released MDS Studio. If you want to access webservices from the device, MDS Studio is entirely the way to go.

I can help if need be.

as it stands, everything up to jde 4.2.1 does not support JSR 172.

if you want to create a j2me app, you'll need do all the soap calls by hand or use a library like ksoap.

i've heard rumours that jde 4.3 is supposed to support jsr 172. or maybe that is just wishful thinking.
