How do I implement these temporary icons like the Internet connection icon that flashes when there's data transfer? It's a couple of arrows in the top right corner of the screen.

the blue arrows appear when the blackberry is transferring data - you don't need to implement them.

I know, but I'd like to implement a similar functionality. How do I do this?

As far as I know, RIM does not give access to their notifications/icons in their screens. Naturally you could do whatever you want in your own screens by manipulating the title in your mainscreen.
