Bell / Telus Switching from CDMA to GSM

There is lots of excitement in Canadian business press about Bell and Telus switching from CDMA to GSM. For American members of the forums, let me...

There is lots of excitement in Canadian business press about Bell and Telus switching from CDMA to GSM. For American members of the forums, let me explain that this technology change (some would call it a downgrade) is due to the fact that Rogers, the only Canadian GSM provider, was getting all roaming fees from residents from outside of N. America visiting Canada, and Bell and Telus were getting nothing. Also, lots of Canadians were walking over to Rogers because their phones wouldn't work when they go for business/vacations overseas, as most of the world outside USA and Canada is using GSM.

While business types can only see the bottom line, from the technical perspective it would be interesting to know how Bell and Telus are actually going to implement the switch. Are they going to install a new GSM hardware on every tower across the country, offer every customer a free GSM phone and then flip the switch? Apparently their GSM infrastructure is actually already in place, but then again, I got this information from the business newspaper, so it's hard to tell what it really means.

Then there is an issue of northern Canada (Northern Ontario, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut), where there has never been any GSM network, only CDMA. There are some very small communities, like three gold mines (Hemlo) in the middle of the wilderness half way between Wawa and Marathon along Hwy 17 in Ontario, probably with just one CDMA tower, and many more places like that. Are they all going to be switched to GSM just like large metropolitan areas, or is Bell/Telus going to offer dual CDMA/GSM phones if you need coverage in those places.

Hi

I'm a fairly new bb user, and have recently unlocked my Bold in order to use it in South Africa. Once on Rogers, I'm now on MTN. However, since switching over sim cards, I've encountered problems -- while I'm able to surf the net, send texts, make calls, I'm unable to use bbm and googletalk AND my gmail account won't update directly to my phone.
What makes this even more frustrating for me, is that neither googletalk nor email-mobile updating works, even when I have a steady wifi connection.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone else have a BB thru Earthlink?

About 6 weeks ago I received a snail mail letter from Earthlink stating that as of 11/1/09 they no longer be in the BIS biz.

So, I have been looking to replace my BIS provider. Also was hoping to find a solution that costs less the $110/month for unlimited data and 1000 mins of Voice.

As a temp fix I got a Samsung 451c from Talk Wireless for a mere $45/month unlimited talk and 30Mb data.

And this morning, I was totally expecting my Earthlink BB to be off line and it isnt! WTF?

Anyone know whats up with Earthlinks BIS service?

Cant even get thru to EL tech support this weekend. Even the onlice chat isnt working!

Tks

After working with VZW tech support for 30 minutes, we (me and the tech) discovered that you cannot use VZ Navigator while your phone is associated to a Wireless Network Extender. I was in a section of my house that normally has VZW service, but because I have a network extender the phone was associated to it (due to it being the strongest signal). When I tried to use VZ Navigator (I like to map address before I leave so I have time to print a map or call to validate an address). When I get to the point of actually locating/creating the map my phone gave me the error telling me to call *611 to verify that my account was setup with VZ Navigator. I unplugged the Wireless Network Extender and was able to use VZ Navigator again. Just a FYI for users that purchased a Wireless Network Extender.
