Default Latest OS: 7130E (CDMA) 4.2.1.174/4.2.1.106 - 12-03-2007, 01:22 PM

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.1.174 (Multilanguage)

This is for CDMA network devices.

Package Version: 4.2.1.174
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.1.106
* Software Platform: 2.3.0.20
* File name: 7130eEFSBP_PBr4.2.1_rel174_PL2.3.0.20_A4.2.1.106_A llTel.exe
* File size: 52.9MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download here.

Installation Instructions

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

Note: Desktop Manager 4.3 still has some issues. Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 is recommended but 4.3 can be used if desired.

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

you should sticky the osclean.cmd file into your announces. its a great tool to clean up the os of unwanted files before an install.

for Vista* make sure to right click on it and choose to run as administrator.

Default Problems? - 12-04-2007, 08:27 AM

If anyone else has installed this upgrade, let me know if there are any bugs or problems. Also what advantage is there going to the new software vs the old?

I tried to load it today. Hung at second restart, DM couldn't find the BB. Wiped it with JL Cmder, still hung at second restart, went back to previous 4.1 version, it wouldn't load through DM, wiped again with JL Cmder. Finally after about 4 hours I am back to a working 7130 with 4.1. I'll try again when my bp falls under 200/100 and my hand heals and i get a new monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Hmm ... nothing positive to say at the moment, eh?

I'm looking to see if I can play with these OS files and see if I'll have any luck with my regular 7130c (copying the .cod files, etc.).

I finally got the 4.2 to work on my Verizon . Noticed some missing and non-operable themes, specifically BB-list. At first there was some slowness, but it's improved. Maybe my imagination but it "feels" like I'm getting better reception in my fringe area. It's obvious that not all the features of the 8xxx series came to the 7130, no voice memos. not sure which other features are missing. I tried loading some Plasmic themes and also from BB site, no joy there. So what does the 4.2 give a 7130?

Anyone got an updated copy of the XML file to unlock the themes? I made one a long time ago but for an older OS.

A bug / annoyance that I found on my phone. When I holster it, it goes to the lock screen. I unlock it and then the "Keypad locked" screen pops up and I have to hit * Green to get back in.

Before when I unholstered it, it would show the "Keypad locked" screen and I could either hit * Green or roll the wheel and select unlock.

Yeah I noticed this problem also, but I think it's something that I can deal with! The updated OS looks great! The Zen theme is the real version now, and instead of there being a list form, there's an array of icons, and it looks a lot different than the hacked version. Also, when you are selecting a theme, it give an image of it, which I think is pretty nice. Media is a new folder/directory added, and I am assuming that I can now upload music and pictures onto my BB via Desktop Manager.

Just installed 4.2 and was pretty nervous doing so because I work in ops for USCC. (You never want to go to the boss and say you screwed up your phone by installing another companies OS) The new OS looks great and I wish that we offered it. The only problem that I'm having now is that I can't seem to rearrange the order of my icons. Anyone know if this is an option?

I followed the directions in the forum and it worked fine with my Verizon unit. The only thing is that some of the themes don't work- but i'm not terribly bothered by this.

I just upgraded and now there's no hotkey to send SMS messages. Before it was really convenient to just press the "L" key to quickly send messages, now its a hotkey to send emails. Has anyone found another shortcut just for SMS?

Also, I had the SLBlack theme which was perfect for me, but now its not compatible w/ the upgrade. Anyone know which themes are compatible?

I've been using the new software for a couple of hours and its pretty decent so far. I really like the ability to add ringtones and pictures directly from my PC and some of the menus better. I like having what profile is activated on the top right corner and the number being visible when your placing a call. Another complaint i have w/ the new software is that when you go into your messages, the top part of the screensaver is still visible.

Default Not getting prompted for Update - 01-21-2008, 11:55 AM

I tried this update for my 7130e using Verizon but i dont get prompted for the update. Verizon tells me the latest they have is 4.1. I would like to upgrade to 4.2 but i dont know if that will kill my connection to BlackBerry Enterprise as thats what we are using with work. This is a work phone.

Any ideas?

WHat would happen if i used an OS from another carrier? Would it still work with Verizon here at the office? Would BES still play nice with it?

Shane,
Welcome to the forums. This update should work (did you delete the vendor.xml?) However, after the update you will need to reactivate on your BES. If Desktop Manager doesn't have an online connection to your email profile then you will need to get an activation password from your BES Admin. If desktop manager has a connection to your email server then Activation will start automatically a few minutes after the update is complete (just leave it plugged in until it starts..)
