Goto Blackberry.com and get the desktop loader and new O.S.
All the programs you need are on this site.

Good Luck!

Can you update the operating system? (What benifits are there from this)
Yes. How do I upgrade the OS on my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ

Can it view microsoft word files?
Yes, but sometimes difficult. You may want to look into BeamBerry if you don't like the native OS ability to do so.

Can it edit microsoft word files? Yes, with eOffice. Look into Dynoplex.

Can you view images on it? Does it have a zoom when viewing images?
Yes. Zoom for images attached to emails.

Is there anything I should look out for on it?

Can you install additional programs on it?
Yes. Look at our Aftermarket Software section of this forum, and
3rd Party Application List - BlackBerryFAQ

what programs do you reccomend to install if you can dd them?
See one of the many many threads on that subject in this 7100 here and in our Aftermarket Software section

Thats all for now. Thanks

For the 7100--you will fine with the 4.2 SP2 withOUT the Media Manager, you don't need the MM.

Get this one, about three down.

that is the one with the MM... 231 MB file download.

You have no use for the Media Manager, you don't want to put lots of images and music on the device or your 32MB memory will be filled.

There isn't a problem with buying used; it is the problems you can have if you aren't careful and don't know what to watch out for. See the link JSanders pointed to and do your due diligence.

If you don't have a Data Plan (and have only a voice plan), you won't be able to do half of the items you asked for above such as getting and viewing MS Word docs, etc.
but it will make a fine phone and text device.

Yes and No. With eOffice, you might.

Without a Data Plan, you won't be able to receive word files.

The difficult level is high, but yes.

Get eOffice, you will probably need Media Manager now, as well. Or at least their file manager product to which you can use to transfer files from the PC to BB. You don't have a media card on the 7100 and VERY limited memory (32mb), so be careful.
