Default Need Help! (My first Blackberry) - 10-20-2009, 09:31 AM

Hello all, i'm new to this forum and the world of blackberrys and i need some help. I bought a 7130v off ebay with no battery or back cover. I purchased these items separately. The other day the battery and back cover came through so i thought i would try to use it (I have ordered a charger but it hasn't arrived yet). Anyway i do have a mini usb data cable from a PS3 (used to charge the controllers) and i connected my blackberry to the computer. When i did this the light at the top came on red, for a couple of seconds then went out and the screen displays a battery with a line through it and it does nothing else, i cant switch it on etc. So i downloaded the manager software for it, and the computer recognizes that the blackberry is plugged in but the software doesn't. Can i charge it from the PC or does it need to be charged using a charger from the mains? Anyway i just wanted to know is this normal for a blackberry or should i sent it back and get a replacement. Any help would be much appreciated.

USB charging via pc is tricky, especially with these older models. Often you cannot connect through a USB hub to charge as there is insufficient power.

Sometimes the cables from other devices have a proprietary thingamajig embedded in them. Those bulges or plastic cylinders, usually towards the end that goes into the device. They can keep some alien devices from working with them.

Some BlackBerrys themselves simply do not support USB charging through a pc, requiring an A/C wall charger.

You could have a damaged/defective battery too. Tough to check without another battery to swap in.

In any case, try a different USB cable plugged directly into a USB port on your pc. I'd also recommend getting a wall charger ASAP. If neither of these will allow you to charge the battery you will want to return it. Too often eBay sellers are offloading damaged goods.

Thankyou for the quick response. I do have a mains charger on the way and the phone did also come from an ebay shop. I also have a 3 month guarantee with the phone so if it is defective i should be able to return it for a new one.
