Unhappy 7290 won't boot - Led flashes - help? - 01-17-2006, 06:33 PM

I've been searching all types of forums and can't seem to find any suggestions for my problem. My 7290 won't start up!

My 7290 started rebooting itself the other day. But when it would finally boot up it would work fine for a while. I noticed whenever I put it into the holster it would reboot. On 2 reboot occasions I also received JVM errors on the screen but then they would disappear and it would start fine.

So I upgraded the OS to 4.0.2 (rogers) in case there was an OS problem. It loaded fine and everything was working. Until I put it into the holster. Of course it would reboot. I waited until it went through it's hour-glass routine and everything came back to normal.

This happened several times. So I stopped putting it back into the holster for a couple days. It was working fine until I applied a little bit of pressure to the casing. Then it rebooted. Fluke? I don't know. I was thinking maybe there is a short or something inside the case when this happened.

During the last reboot episode i think it died. It doesn't start up anymore! The LED flashes RED for 5 seconds, then off for 7 seconds, then red for 5 seconds, etc, etc.

I even tried leaving it plugged in to the USB cable for 7 hours in case it needed a good charge. I also tried holding the battery in place tightly in case it was loose. But no luck.

Any suggestions? Ideas? Could it be a hardware problem ? I have opened the casing and nothing looks unusual to me.

Does the fact that the LED is flashing at least give me some hope ?

It is out of warranty and I am really hoping I don't have to buy a new one.

My 7100T BB was doing a similar thing after a failed OS upgrade. When I would power it on the screen remained black and the LED would flash red every few seconds. I had to completely uninstall BB desktop manager and my USB ports in Windows, reboot and reinstall the BB software. Then I connected my BB and reinstalled the OS from scratch.

Others have mentioned using the javaloader.exe program that comes with the BB developer SDK and doing a complete wipe then reinstall the OS. "javaloader.exe -usb wipe"

Good luck

ya, tried connecting with javaloader but it does not connect. Even tried it on 2 other pc's. One that has Desktop Manager installed and another that never had it installed. It can't open the port.

I've tried reseting it several times by removing the battery and at one point I got the "Device Error: 365" message. After searching the forums I see that this is not good. Probably a hardware failure that can't be fixed. Arrrgggg.

I bought this 7290 several months used in April05 so I have no warranty on it. I can't believe I have to go dish out more $$ for another one now. Anyone have a good deal on an 8700r ? :(

Did you use the command correctly?
I just hate to see this 7290 go to waste.

Try copy this to note pad and save as wipe.bat

@echo on
javaloader -usb wipe
pause

OS v4.5.0.81 (108) PL 2.7.0.78

Ya, tried that. It says can't open port on all 3 machines i tried. Yet it does open the port when I try it with a BB that's working.

d:\>javaloader -usb wipe
RIM Wireless Handheld Java Loader
Copyright 2001-2005 Research In Motion Limited
Connecting to device...Error: unable to open port

And my 7290 is displaying "Device Error: 365" now. Which from what I read is a bad sign.

Man. It's like the days when satellite cards would get looped and you couldn't access them anymore.

Unless someone else has some other ideas, I guess all I can do is use this for parts and put the money toward a new one.

I've had the same problems with my 7290...I'm going to try to wipe and reload tonight. I bought mine used off of ebay...does that mean I have a warranty or no?

I spoke to someone else today at Rogers Tech Support. I explained my problems and he told me there was nothing else I could do. It is dead. And... he told me i could still get it replaced under warranty! Woooohoooo. So they are sending me a new one (well, refurbished). I have to pay $25 for shipping.

I really thought my warranty was done, but I guess not. I even told him i bought it used but it didn't matter. So it's best to call them to find out for sure.

Thanks for your ideas folks.
