Default 4.0 on 7290?? - 02-04-2005, 04:42 PM

Anyone know when 4.0 will be released for the 7290, either by Blackberry or by Cingular?? (or, since T-Mo is supposedly releasing this model real soon, will they have 4.0 available?)

Thanks.

Many people have loaded the Hong Kong version on the 7290 without issue. (see sticky) It is my understanding there is very little difference from 3.8 on the 7290.

good luck...

Unless you have BES 4.0, in which case there are lots of differences.

Like OTA sync of calender, tasks, and memos, and opening email attachments foreign to 3.8, and utilizing certain software, and...

Shoot, when's it coming!

TMO's model will ship with OS4.0. Rogers will be offering OS4.0 tentatively on Feb 7, per Mark. Cingular is still in the pipeline, but I'd say in the next week for them as well.

And as NJBB stated, there are hardly any differences between OS3.8 and OS4.0 unless you are on a corporate or 3rd party BES4.0. The functionality mentioned (OTA syncs, etc) will only be available in that scenario (OS4+BES4).

I downloaded Hong Kong v4.0. I went back to v3.8. My screen contrast was much lower on the HK ver. Also the call volume, on handset and BT, was very low, almost unable to hear. When I went back to v3.8 the password keeper stayed on the handheld. I will wait for the Cingular version. I guess I will have to be more patient for BBToday.

Not the one I got (Cingular). I have it now though. I am curious what the difference is between 3.8.0.161 (Cingular) and 3.8.0.168 (ATTWS).

probably just a few minor bug fixes. you could likely reinstall the 3.8 OS onto the handheld and would have gotten the option to install Password Keeper.

also, just keep in mind that the providers in Hong Kong tend to release their software very early on. i would say they release the 'release candidates' whereas others would prefer to beta test a bit more before releasing the software on to their customers. its a difference in the various cultures, i would think.

you can see the differences between the Apps 4.0 versions between the different providers. more testing will equal less support (wishful thinking). i guess that could bring into question the level of support (or the wages of support reps) in SE Asia.

I'm on Rogers and just upgraded to the HK version of 4.0. WOW! What a difference when using BES 4 (Mailstreet). I don't think I will ever need to plug it into my PC again. I could have waited till the 7th but what the heck.

This Blackberry continues to impress me. I coming from a Dell Axim PocketPC and only use the BB for data. Have a contract with Bell for phone

Also I could not install Verichat or eOffice with HK OS4 on my Rogers 7290. Others had the same problem with Verichat. Other than that it worked ok.
