Hi, my dad just bought me a blackberry pearl 8100. I want to know if I should install the new OS and why do I need it? What other things do I need to put movies/music on it. I've downloaded and installed the Desktop Software v4.2 SP2 and the Mplayer for encoding videos. Also is it just like drag and drop into the SD card? Any other cool things I can do with this? I also downloaded the colorpearl but haven't connected the phone to the pc yet just want to make sure everything. and can I possibly destroy my phone when installing new OS or other applications? thanks in advance

You may NOT need a new OS. If it is working fine to your needs, you don't. As you use it over the next few weeks and read the threads here, you may find a reason you want to upgrade it.

Download you current OS to your PC, it will need to be installed there for you Appliation Loader to recognize and load apps to your 8100.

Look at the Stinsonddog Tips in my signature, print out the PDF for the 8100 and practice the tricks there with your BB in hand, you will be amazed at all that is there.

FAQs too. See the third party applications list.

Good luck, enjoy, Welcome to the BB Forums!

also what do you mean by download your current OS to your PC? How do I download my current OS to the PC and install it. If I want to install a newer one, do I uninstall my current one or are they files?

I guess you completely ignored my part about reading the FAQs.

Your media card, forget Roxio if you can, and enable Mass Storage: How do I add media files to my microSD card? - BlackBerryFAQ

From your carrier, download the same OS you have your BB now (options > About > v.4.??). Also at the FAQ site: (choose your carrier):
BlackBerry Operating System Downloads - BlackBerryFAQ

If you want to install a newer one, just load the newer one, you don't need to uninstall the old one first.
