Default Sweet!

Right on, thanks man! I'm glad to know there is such a thriving community of knowledgeable people, working on everything blackberry. In the world 2.0 it is almost more important to have a forum like this then any combination of features or services provided!

It's even better than looking in the online help built into the BlackBerry

John, can you be just a bit more clearer. I've been experimenting in the verizon store. First, went to 2 stores, asked them two things - how do you dial a phone number using letters, and when you get into a voice mail system and need to type out a persons name, how do you do that. Both stores tod me suretype. when I told convinced them they were wrong, they asked around, called their own tech support and couldn't find an answer. so I tried the al key myself with no luck. Is the alt key on the bottom left?

thanks for any guidance,

Larry

Yes, the ALT key is in the lower left hand corner.
To type a letter (as part of a phone number) press AND HOLD the ALT key and press the corresponding letter on the keypad.

It really does work!

just came back from the Verizon store.....it didn't work. Are you 1000% sure? As a matter of fact, the Verizon guy who "claimed" he was a blackberry expert, immediately siad there is no way to do it on any blackberry.

Hmm - well, he must be an expert.

Works on my 8320. Works on my 8800, works on my wife's 8100.

Perhaps the 8130 is different.

You must be a number field (phone; postal/zip code).

Sorry - the Verizon guy is just plain wrong. I am 1001% sure.

Open the Phone application; press the green key.

Type 1 800 and then hold the ALT key and press FLOWERS or whatever keys apply on the 8130/Suretype keyboard. Letters will appear. At least on every BB I've tested here.

Here's another idea - check the online help system on the 8130 itself. In the past (again; all pre version 4.3) there is a section on how to dial letters on the keyboard. Check in there also.

Edit: From the Help file on the PC that is installed when you install the 8130 Handheld code...

Dial using numbers or letters
When you type a letter in a phone number, your BlackBerry® device dials the number that is associated with the letter on a conventional phone keypad.
To type a number, press a number key.
To type the first letter on a key, hold the Alt key. Press the letter key once.
To type the second letter on a key, hold the Alt key. Press the letter key twice.

Dead horse beaten

Yeah, those in-store reps are "Experts" alright.

I have a 4.3 Pearl and I can dial letters in the phone just fine. It works just like NJBlackberry has described. It's worked like this for years. Works on my 8320 too.

well to be honest, I didn't try to actually make a call and in fact the letters did show up. what I had expected was that if I tried to type "VERIZON", the "V" on a normal phone would correspond to an 8. The 8 has a certain tone to it. So what you are saying is that when you enter an alt V and the V shows up, it will in fact correspond to the tone of an 8? If that's the case, and you've tested it, case closed and I truly appreicate the info.

Yep, just type in the word when you dial and the BB will do the rest. Neat feature, really.
