"On the 8100 and 71xx models you can hold down the * key for a few seconds while you're typing to switch between then 2 typing modes (multitap and suretype)"

W/the Telus OS, does this work on the 8130?

The * key on mine locks the keys.

Thanks. I'm interested in the results on the 8130 Pearl with the new Telus OS.

I loaded the Telus OS on mine and have the same results. I do notice a padlock in the corner when I lock the keys that I don't think was there before.

I think the padlock is there just when you enable a password. I could be wrong...

It does if you are in the application list. Otherwise it is the symbols key.

Can you guys check something else? Is the intermittent backlight dimming still going on? I had turned off backlighting dimming on an 8130 in the store, and the display would still dim, seemingly randomly, regardless of any ambient light change...

Seems to work ok on mine. I turned off the auto backlight dimming and checked in a dark room and under a flash light. Looks the same no matter what. The light remains on.

Excellent! That (given my amazingly bad eyesight) was one of my key concerns... :D

Loaded the new OS. Haven't really noticed anything different. However, it "lost" my Yahoo email. The icon was still there, and I could send emails from it, but couldn't receive emails on the handset. A battery pull took care of that and so far it appears that the Yahoo email was fixed by that.

From what I've seen...

"Confirmed" updates gained from the Verizon .60 version to the .65 Telus version:

- Can initiate calls via Bluetooth when the phone is in standby/in holster
- Pressing/holding Mute puts Pearl into standby w/out requiring confirmation
- Auto-dim works properly (display doesn't dim when auto-dim is turned off)

Things people have posted, but aren't quite as simple as works/doesn't work to confirm:

- More free memory (seen a few posts)
- Louder volume (one post)
- A bit faster (one post)

Issues:

- Some of the "Today" themes aren't displaying properly
- Mixed reports on Bluetooth connection stability, some positive, some unchanged
- Have now seen one report of a memory leak not appearing until after the upgrade

Since this isn't a Verizon OS, is the GPS no longer crippled from Google Maps? Or does Verizon actually cripple the hardware??

Jared:

No - I don't even have a Pearl yet! :(

My NE2 is Thursday, so I've been living vicariously and arming myself w/as much knowledge as possible in advance.

This last few weeks has nothing but delayed gratification for me (which I'm not very good at, my wife has had a great time making fun of me).

I will be at the VZW store Thursday AM when they open. I sure hope I really like this phone when I get it home...after all this time invested in it, I'll be very bummed if it doesn't work out for me!

Yeah...I had misunderstood my NE2 date at first, so when I signed up here I thought I'd have the phone in a day or so...

Auto dim off works but when you browse it will alsudden do its own thing and comes on in off mode, then it controls the dimm it self on the phone in off mode, when you turn it on and off again it stays good for a while, I have a telus unit and it has a mind of its own with the auto dim.

I've been trying to download the OS all evening, and every time I get to around 75-80% completed, the file just stops retrieving data. This has happened about 5 times now, and I can't get the download to complete. Anyone else have this problem? It's driving me nuts!

8100 or 8130? Your profile says 8100...

Bummer if that happens on the 8130.

Mine appeared to freeze several times, but eventually kept going. Did you give it a while to see if it was just "pausing?"

I'd give it some time, but there would be no data coming into my machine. The transfer rate is always hitting 0.0 and staying there.

I would try one, then the other, and then I tried both at the same time, and they would always time out at the same time as well. No matter though, they downloaded fine at work this morning and my phone has been updated!

Sounds like a problem w/your home network and/or ISP. Yours is the only post I've seen noting problems...

Glad you got it done, finally.

Yeah, that's what I figure as well. I just don't know why the connection would be working fine for 80% of the download, and then just drop it. But that's OK, it worked smoothly here at work so all is good!

I've just noticed that the option to delete emails from just the handset or the server as well is now gone with this release. It merely asks if you want to delete the message. Does anyone know if this removes the message from the server as well, or if there is an option to this?

on the newer GSM 8100 Rim OS... you can no longer toggle between sure type and multitap by pressing/holding the */SYM key while in a text field... you must use the Menu key, and select...

The 8130 follows this as well.. :( I miss this feature!

It's in the email setting to choose what to delete from.

My pearl now randomly wakes up when on standby in my pocket. It never did before (well, if I pressed ~1000 buttons in a row, eventually it did), but with this software the phone has sent out a few blank emails while it was in my pocket due to hitting buttons, I presume. Any setting I can change to fix it, or should I just go back to the old software, or just use the key lock setting?
Anyone else seen this?

Tried asking about the .66 OS for Bell, got a pretty much useless answer. Bell often suggests some of my questions be directed to RIM, and RIM gives the standard can't comment response
