Default 8120 OS: Orange UK - 4.3.0.145 / 4.3.0.79 - 12-11-2007, 11:30 AM

Quote:
Software For BlackBerry 8120 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.3.0.145 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.3.0.145
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.3.0.79
Software Platform: 2.6.0.43
File name: 8120M_PBr4.3.0_rel145_PL2.6.0.43_A4.3.0.79_Orange_ UK.exe
File size: 106.31MB
Download link: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...223C61B1B5AB89

Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

Default Release Notes - 12-12-2007, 05:24 AM

Are RIM ever going to provide release notes with new firmware?

This is the first manufacturer, to my knowledge, who keeps releasing regular updates but never tells the poor fools who load the s/w what they are actually loading.

After my recent experience of upgrading, screwing the phone up and having to go back to an even older firmware, I am now a bit dubious about upgrading.

I am a believer in the saying "If it's not broken - don't fix it", but I am always finding little things that could potentially be improved, never mind the fact that I 'could' possibly load the f/w and find a new feature - sometimes the temptation is too great.

If RIM are listening, what's the harm in providing the release notes - I bet you provide them to the carriers, what's to hide?

I used to work for a rather large electronics company and they never gave out the software release notes because it was bad publicity.
A person may be aware of one or two issues but there may be 50 issues known and so they would be telling people of another 48 issues they didnt need to!
We did tell people of new features though which is good publicity so it makes no sense that RIM don't do that.

I agree, I also work for an Electronics manufacturer and while we don't tell everyone about every single bug, we do publish release notes on the major bugs that 99% of people will find, and also as you said with feature upgrades.

Telling customers nothing does not install much confidence.

i haven't proved it to be this software as the cause but since i have upgraded i have suddenly lost all sound from the speaker and so have had no notification for emails, BB msgs etc.
This has happened twice now and have cured it both times by a battery pull.

What would happen if I loaded this S/W on an 8100? Would it still work, would it enable video recording for the regular 8100 pearl or just mess everythign up?

It won't load. You can't interchange OS's from different devices like you can for like devices from different carriers.

I bloody hate this O.S.
Have found so so many issues so far...
- auto speaker on for the 1st few seconds on every single call....even if it's not setup on speakers...
- Bberry messenger login problems...cannot send or reply to any messages as "user not logged in" while I can receive messages from the same user.
- ringtones setting themselves back to default...
- cannot remove the phone pass once setup....
- not remembering the passwords on any installed applications even if I set them up to remember.

....to mention just a few that I can recall right now...
