Mike, if you are getting the flashing red light, it sounds like you need to follow the instructions here:

You can upgrade if you like. If you are not having any issues there is no need to upgrade unless you want to. The OS will work fine on any 8100 from any carrier.

I installed the OS like I always do, but when I launch the desktop manager, I'm not prompted to upgrade...tried repairing the install, and restarting the computer...

Any ideas?

My phone's been giving me MAJOR headaches lately (disappearing sms/mms, emails, random freezes, long hourglass times) so I really want to update!

Make sure you installed the correct OS for your device.

Make sure you delete the vendor.xml file after installation. If you deleted it THEN installed the OS make sure you delete it again. It gets installed every time you install the OS.

The disappearing emails, and hourglassing is a memory issue. Check my link for "Optimize your BB's Memory."

If I upgrade to this OS and wanted to revert to my previous version how easy is it and how is it done?

TIA.

It's easy if you have a copy of the old OS on your PC. Simply uninstall the newer OS and run application loader and it will downgrade you. You can also wipe with JL_Cmder first before loading the old OS. You'll need to download the old OS just as you downloaded the new OS, though.

Hello,
is there in 4.3.1.14 (for BB 8100) some spyware?
I don't understand why I've got SMS notice about internet data transfer even if I don't use it now. Here is log info from my BB:

Name: net.rim.tunnel
Severity: Always Logged
GUID: 3b91e1630f0745bc
Time: Feb 19, 2008 12: 49:18

What does it mean?

This has not been released for the 8100. And when it is released I believe it will be a 4.5.x OS (4.3 was renamed).

I installed this OS and unlocked the themes. After using it for the past couple of weeks, I have some subjective impressions.

I've had one instance of the unit freezing, but it doesn't seem to be any worse than the previous software.

It seems that the battery life is somewhat reduced, but it's hard to be sure.

The multi-tap problem seems to be gone but the phone is still completely braindead when it comes to entering numbers like 1-800-GOFEDEX. Why can't they figure this out?

Other than that, I haven't encountered any problems. The phone seems to work fine.

JL_Cmder is a tool to wipe the OS off your BB but also has some other features included such as screenshots, etc.

If you are simply going to upgrade, you don't need JL_Cmder.

Does the upgrade come with things to fix errors you get when playing certain video?

Upgrading is a simple process and it's all automatic.

However, if you're unsure and your BB is working fine, there is no reason to mess with it.

Package Version: 4.2.1.181; Consisting of:

Software Platform: 2.3.0.85
File size: 73.29MB

Download

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year

Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you don't have the folder in Step #3, then you have not installed the OS to the PC. Double-click on the exe file which you dowload.

This does work.

It won't do anything for "sim card error." That comes from a improperly installed sim card.

Ok, enough with the language, please.

I've never seen the trackball just "fall out." Did it get dropped? I would contact TMobile about the "Sim card error." An OS change most likely isn't going to fix that. Something is wrong with the device or the sim card.

So i deleted the DAO program and my blackberry desktop and reloaded the desktop program i got with my phone. I am going to try downloading the 4.3 desktop again and seeing if it works, if not i'll try loading it on my laptop.

Reference the 4.3/4.5 OS that will hopefully be coming out soon, who is programming it? Is it something RIM is working on itself? Or is some carrier like Rogers/AT&T/Verizon/etc developing it?

All OS's are written by RIM then sent to the carriers for testing and release. That's why you can use any carrier's OS on your device.

Question if everybody has problems with the SMS thing does anybody have the file .71 still around? im getting horrible problems usually associated with the time of day lol. Unbelievable i know. Usually around 1-2am in the morning my phone will 'freeze' i can move the ball up and down along my quick select screen but once i highlight a certain object and press down on it nothing will happen. Or if I do manage to get into lets say text/email it will just start to randomly select things and work super weird. As in sending 6 texts to people that are 3 letters long and meaning absolutely nothing. Or scrolling through address book and calling people. Any fix haha?

You may need to search through the GSM carriers for one that still hosts the 4.2.0.71 OS. It's getting pretty old, so you may be unsuccesful.

Many of them have older versions too. You may have to do a little digging.
