Exclamation 8100 OS: Rogers 4.2.1.189 / 4.2.1.109 (Multilanguage) - 12-23-2007, 07:00 AM

Hy, a new OS is out .

8100M_PBr4.2.1_rel181_PL2.3.0.85_A4.2.1.109_Rogers .exe

Package Version: 4.2.1.181; Consisting of:
Applications: 4.2.1.109
Software Platform: 2.3.0.85
File size: 73.29MB

Download

Credits to "acnst" from http://www.blackberry-forum.de

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year

Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

That's not what we are waiting for
Better post us a link to 4.3 OS.
Are there any changes between .108 and .109??

Since when does downloading a new OS require signing your life away to RIM?

It's always been that way. I've been telling them who I am for several years. They haven't come after me yet.

I doubt there is much difference. This one is multilanguage, the other was Asian.

software platform is the same as the .108 only difference is the .109 which probably is a carrier feature instead of a RIM thing but I installed it but I don't see how people are having a problem with the message que problem I don't have it.

Will this update fix the problem of it not recognizing the microSDHC cards? I bought the 4gig Sandisk and the pearl doesn't even recognize it at all.

Arrrrgggghhh!!! Why can't they fix this!!?? How hard is it? The bug is even in the 4.3 OS betas. If everything wasn't signed up the wazoo, I would fix it myself... This was never a problem in the 4.2.0 series OS. It can't be that hard for RIM to compare the changed SMS code to figure out what they broke.

What was the last good known stable 4.2 OS where this SMS queue would send when back in coverage?

My guess is that it is not a "bug." Probably a battery saving move by RIM.

4.2.0.71 is what I run, and it works great. Rock solid.

It is clearly a bug, because emails on latter OS' still queue email just fine. Furthermore, when you think of the logic behind the whole thing the radio will be doing service scans on its own interval completely regardless of what type of data is waiting to go over the wireless network.

They just need to add back whatever statements told the SMS sending mechanism to wait until signal was re-established.

No you can't. You'll need to download it to your PC, run & install the file, then perform the OS update using the Desktop Manager.

You say "3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader".
I don't see where is my vendor.xml file. I have no directory named "Apploader" under RIM. I have 4 xml files : ascii_tblinfo, configurationupgrade, device_tblinfo_1033 and ota_tblinfo_1033 and none where I can recognize the name of my carrier. So can you precise which file has to be deleted ?
Thanks a lot and best wishes for you all.

Chloe, that file location IS the precise directory where the vendor.xml file will be located...
c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

If it is NOT there, perhaps you have not downloaded the new OS, or installed it to your PC yet by double clicking on the *.exe file which you downloaded?

Hi. Just installed upgrade. Rogers customer here. No problems during install. Though I had to re-register some of my 3rd party software as it lost my settings. I also lost access to digby and to Beyond 411. Both cannot access the internet. I did put internet.com in my APN TCP config. And that did give me access to BBWEATHER and Opera, etc. But Digby and Beyond 411 just do not work.

Wierd thing is that with Beyond 411 when I tell it to use a basic connection it brings up the standard BlackBerry browser, but never connnects. It just times out. Even if I just click About/Upgrades.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Allan

Another problem I just found is that when making changes to the calendar (editing, adding, removing entries) the pearl seems to freeze for about 10 seconds while it saves the changes. This never happened before.

I also notice the hour glass coming up alot more then it used to. Especially when it comes out of sleep mode, or whatever it is called when you have not touched it for over a few minutes and you pick it up and press any button.

Anyone else noticing these things?

By the way, I have not upgraded OS's for about 8 months, so it could be that these problems were added in a previous release and just not fixed yet.

Allan

I've had enough of the 4.2.1.x releases. They've all been bad in my experience for different reasons. 103 seemed to suffer with hourglass or uncaught exceptions. 108 & 109 are battery hogs. 109 locked up the phone in media player today.

4.2.0.71 seems to be highly recommended. What significant functionality was added with 4.2.1 that I'll be missing with the downgrade (and I'm talking serious functionality)?

Also, when did that nice calculator come along? The original one was CRAP!

Thanks in advance!

4.2.1 allowed you to separate sms/email. It also upped the max capacity of media cards to 4Gb. Those are the biggies that I remember.

Anyone know if this OS supports using DUN via Bluetooth, like in 4.2.1.66? Still hoping to find a more recent OS that allows me to use my TomTom's data services.

Welcome to the forums.
yes, your phone will still be unlocked. You can't relock the device once it's been unlocked...even if you wanted to.

@John Clark, thanks for the info. After checking older firmware I realized that it was only 4.2.1.10x releases that were so bad. I've since wiped the device clean and loaded 4.2.1.96. It has the nice calculator and from what I remember, better battery life. We'll see.

If 4.2.1.96 is stable and reliable, I will probably keep it and do no further upgrades on the Pearl until a 4.3.x.x release.

Incidentally, this site has been crawling for the past 24 hours that I've tried to use it.

Yea, we had to make the sacrifice in battery life. Version .108 (maybe .107) for the 8700, 8800 and 8100 solved my problem with users having to do battery pulls once a week to receive e-mail from the BES. Less phone calls from them about battery pulls equals more time for me to do other work. Version .108 has been wonderful for my entire system since the 4.2.0.### release. 4.2.1.### fixed my users ability to use the devices as podcast and music players too. 4.2.1.96 was good, but we still had battery pulls on the 8100's. I upgraded to 4.2.1.109 just for fun even though the Platform is the same.

So what's the verdict? I'm a Rogers subscriber. Should I stick with the existing Rogers software or go with the new version?

If you have no problems with how you use the phone, then don't upgrade at all.

I listen to alot of music and podcasts on my way to work through an FM transmitter so I use the Pearl as an MP3 player. Version 4.2.1.100+ fixed a problem where all MP3 files playback properly. The 4.2.1.96 or older had difficulty on many MP3 files and would improperly determine is length and end the MP3 early or not let you forward or rewind properly.

My users rely on their Blackberry's for E-mail and calendar access. Version 4.2.1.108 fixed all of our problems with not getting e-mail or calendar updates. About once every week or two, all of my 8xxx series phone users would have to pull their battery to receive e-mails from our BES. Version 4.2.1.108 solved this problem, but battery life has been significantly shortened. Maybe more power is being diverted to the transmitter or maybe the 312mhz CPU is running more tasks. Eitherway, we could sacrifice the 25-30% loss in battery life for access to information.

After a solid year and a half of battery pulls, we haven't pulled in months. And its nice separating corporate E-mails from Text Messages.
