I'm new to BB, I've been a windows mobile / activesync user for some time. Is there someone around that knows both to tell me the differences?

I want to be able to get email / contacts and calendar from Outlook / Exchange.

Welcome to the forums.

Install this to your computer:

BlackBerry - BlackBerry - Sys Req V4-2 Pack 2

Unless you're on a BES you'll have to sync your contacts/calendar, etc. via the desktop manager.

It works basically the same.

I read a little too quickly.

As JSanders said, to get Exchange info you'll need a BES or Redirector (in Desktop Manager) running on your computer connected to Exchange. Without a BES you'll need to sync with a cable for your calendar, contacts, memo, tasks, etc.
