Default Internet with pay per use instead of data package

Please Login to Remove!

Hello, I am current ATT customer and thinking about upgrading to a blackbery pearl. I like the looks of the phone and the camera/mp3 player capabilities. I do not use the internet very often and there is no way I could justify paying 30 a month for the blackberry data package. From what I have read you are not supposed to be able to access the internet without the blackberry package, but is there anyway I can set up the phone to do this and just use the 1 cent /kb option I have on my current phone? Like I said I don't use it much but it is nice to have the option.

As a follow up, anyone running google maps able to tell me about how much data is used to connect and download directions?

I believe if you configure your APN settings (What are the TCP and APN settings? - BlackBerryFAQ.com) then you will be charged for whatever data you use.

Google maps is pretty data intensive. You don't necessarily download directions and save them. It is more of a real-time data usage application. If you are going to use Google Maps regularly then I would recommend some sort of data plan, even if it is the generic AT&T PDA data plan.

from what i have heard, it is not possible to use the internet without a blackberry internet service (BIS) data plan on a blackberry. even if you could use the internet on a pay per usage, you wouldn't want to run google map because it needs an active internet connection at all time. it doesn't just download directions once and then go from there.

FYI How to use BlackBerry on Generic Data Plan - BlackBerryFAQ.com

But ditto on the other.
