i went all the way back to the verizon issued software and i am back up to about 15 FPS - it is much better quality video

i tried different areas - bright and dark...the .97 gave the poorest results in FPS

hmm I reverted to .81 without success getting youtube to work After that I decided to go back to .71 which is what my phone had when it came in and no luck either. I keep getting the unsupported format with youtube as well as vtap. Both sites used to work before I did the upgrade. Any ideas on settings that might be messed up?

You could go extreme and use Jloader to do a wipe and reload the OS. But frankly, I don't know if that would help. Very weird what's happening to you...does Sprint require an APN setting?

I did the whole JLoader and reload the OS after the 507 error and no luck. It has to be a setting somewhere. Sprint doesn't require APN. I feel stupid calling the blackberry support center for youtube playback but I might do that if I can't figure it out by Monday. Thanks for your suggestions.

Try this - hook it up to the PC, and follow the instructions in the FAQ on this page...

Just as an update. I am in the process of downgrading because, for whatever reason, with .81 I averaged about 16.5MB of free memory. The memory ever so slowly would decrease and I would perform a soft reset every four or five days.

With .97, however, I began with 15.9 or so MB on install and it quite quickly would proceed into the 14's (within a day or less).

I am not sure if it's simply based on programs I have installed, but I seem to have had better success with .81.

Edit:

Any idea what I am doing wrong here? I uninstalled .97, restarted the computer, and opened DM (sans vendor.xml). Nothing. I reinstalled .81 and redeleted vendor.xml. Still nothing. Any idea why DM isn't trying to replace the software on the Pearl?

some leftovers must be still on your HD and DM thinks that the latest version is .97.
You may look into windows registry and see if there any relevant entries relating to .97 in DM branch(es).

Last resort would be uninstalling DM too, clean up and install again followed by OS installation

Personally, I think that you can clean up .97 a little bit and be at the same memory level as .81

With all this "upgrading" I doubt that there are any real differences between Altell, Verizon or US Cellular, so you should be able to get exactly the same stuff with with .97 as with .81

When you ran DM, did you open the App Loader and go to the application listing screen and see if it listed any action on the BB OS applications?

At either of those memory levels you are perfectly fine...if the apps you have installed have changed between versions, that will obviously affect memory, as well as what you're doing w/the BB (more playing/tweaking w/a new OS, maybe).

But I wouldn't go through a downgrade for that variance, at least not unless you saw a bigger difference and faster, consistent memory loss. You could do a couple very minor memory tweaks (remove a few irrelevant CODs) and be above your former memory leve.

If anything, I have noticed the exact opposite. I got 1 extra MB of memory, and the memory "trickle" has slowed considerably. I used to lose about 1-2 MB per day and it would stop losing memory at about 10 MB. Now after two days, I have only lost about 300 KB.

For whatever reason, I could not get DM to install the older software. So, I reinstalled .97. (Can you tell I am not a very patient person--or overly concerned.) I will mention that under .81, my memory decreased only slightly, as you noted yours does now. But, with .97, after a reset, I have about 16.6MB (I cleared off the help and medical dictionary). Within about three hours, I am down to 16.1. While it is still much more memory than when I used VZW's .60, I cannot understand what's causing 500K to drop when all it is doing is sitting on my desk.

I suppose I'll just rely on soft reset and the eventual release of 4.5.

Default New To BB - 02-04-2008, 08:15 PM

Hey all,
I am new to BB and I was reading this forum and finally figured out how to download the new OS .97 for my 8130. Thanks so much for the help!

Me too! Thanks everyone...

Quick question: I do notice that menus now have much larger font size than before. It doesn't seem to be controlled by the font settings in Tools. Is this just a byproduct of the upgrade, or is there a way to reduce the size of the menu fonts?

I am in desperate need here.
Last night I tried to update my pearl with the latest OS which was taking roughly 2-3 hours. When the time to initialize started, it erroed out because it said it needed a password?

So now the device is looped on the Hourglass screen, and my PC detects something's plugged in, however, DM won't recognize it to late me wipe, and try again.

Please! Someone help me my device is not even a week old.

Use Jloader to wipe it, and then reinstall the OS.

The font/point size of most (maybe all?) BB key menus is controlled by the theme, not the OS. Not sure what you're seeing...

I am using the Dimension L theme and the font type and size is controlled by the selection Screen/Keyboard option of the Options menu. Whenever you update the OS, it will "erase" your font type and size selection and will revert back to the default.

Hmmm...must vary by theme. The last two themes I've applied have set different font/sizes on my BB menus...the size setting in Options>Screen/Keyboard has no affect.

Are you sure we're talking about the same thing? I'm referring to the menus that appear when you press the BB key. Same for things like the Messages and email folders...themes can control those displays as well, and there isn't any text size setting that overrides it.

I'm trying to follow the guide, I left the battery out, like it said, but then i just get a steady image of a battery and a line across it.

I plugged it back in, tried JL, I got the 507 error, but then when I try to use DM, it doesn't find the device, just gives me an error.

Thanks

The battery missing display is expected.

By "tried JL" I assume you mean you wiped it...sounds like it if you got the 507 error.

Follow the instructions here starting w/the "Command line tasks" section...

Heh, I was afraid of having to use Command prompt - I'm blocked out of it by my admistrator (School-Rented laptop). I guess I'm out of luck then?

Yep. The default font is BBAlphaSans in a font size of 10. I've changed it BBCasual in a font size of 8. This choice gets reflected in all of the BB menus. When I updated to OS .97, it changed it back to the default. After getting used to BBCasual 8, the default looked HUGE.

So it's theme-dependent. The last three themes I've loaded (BBOSX, bPhone, Satin) lock that stuff down - apparrently the "basic" themes that come from the carriers do not, hence the font change at OS update. Wonder if theme developers lock the font down intentionally, or it's an option that isn't available to them for some reason...

Does this update having anything in it about the missing MMS functionality on Alltel 8130 phones? Does anyone have any information regarding that function?

That's usually handled on the carrier side of things via provisioning on your sim card.

OK, I've updated to US Cellular 4.3.0.97 from AllTel .81 and now I can't stream from SomaFM: Commercial-Free, Independent Internet Radio nor from ORB. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

UPDATE: Go figure. Now its working.

I only got streaming to work once. I've tried over and over. It works fine on my wife's Verizon .60 build and worked fine on my AllTel .81 build.

Is anyone else not able to stream via Verizon on .97? Try SomaFM: Commercial-Free, Independent Internet Radio, try the Groove Salad 64kbs stream. Thanks.

Soma doesn't work for me, but I never tried it w/any other 4.3 release, so no comparative results. It works on my wife's (running Telus).

Folks w/various 4.3 versions installed have had streaming working, some not. Based on what I've seen recently, streaming appears to be somewhat "twitchy," and not directly related to the 4.3 release being run. I thought .97 had fixed my streaming issues, but when I posted that here, folks said they had been streaming just fine on earlier releases of 4.3. Things aren't too clear in this area for me.

At this point, Soma doesn't work for me, but BlueApple, which never worked for me before .97, works now. Go figure...

ORB isn't working for me either. This is very frustrating. Both were working fine under AllTel .81
