No prob...you'll learn pretty quickly that a battery pull is usually the best place to start if your Pearl starts acting up...you can try SoftReset first, but the pull provides "deeper cleaning" for some reason.

The .97 OS seems to have better memory management - I have yet to fall below 10MB.

How much memory do you have after a battery pull? The 10Mb is great if you start with 11 or 12, but terrible if you start with 19 or 20.

No, no, no....don't do it!!!!

Just follow the directions carefully, and whatever you do, don't do an OS update from a laptop running on a battery...

If it's not too late, you might want to look at this thread...

Is there a mobile site for them?
When I go to the somafm.com site on my Pearl (using Opera Mini), I have to scroll around to the streaming links. There is no 64Kb link for Groove salad, but I found 56Kb; when i click i just get a donation request--doesnt start the media player or anything...nothing is downloading)(got a link to another thread?)

I am using the stock Verizon OS version 4.3.0.15, and now figuring out which OS to upgrade to. Probably go for .97, which looks best overall.

it might help the comparisons if posters say what their memory and EvDo situation is along with if streaming works or not...

I start with 16-17 MB. Before this update I would start with 16MB and head down steadily to 0. But, I was running more junk then too, like GSync so I'm not sure why its acting better now. I still have to reboot every few days because Media Player gets confused sometimes and doesn't see any music files, or starts playing through the speaker when I turn off the stereo bluetooth in my car, stuff like that.

Use the BB browser to go to SomaFM: Commercial-Free, Independent Internet Radio, not Opera.

Default Text Messages and Call History deleted - 02-22-2008, 04:22 PM

This worked great for a day, until all of the sudden after lunch today, I noticed that 99% of my text messages were gone, and my call history was cleared.

Anyone else have this happen?

That is a low memory issue doesnt have anything to do with OS

You have too much running and installed.

I don't agree. This used to happen on my Verizon .60 OS but does not any more. I think the OS version does matter.

Let me start off by saying I just got my new Pearl 8130 a little less than a week ago...and I thought it was cool, never having own a Black Berry device before I didn't really know what to expect going from a measley hacked
Mot e815...but I had a problem...the phone would jump from 1x to 1X to 1EV and would then screw all of my internet and e-mail connections up which would require either a battery pull or (didn't find this out till after the fact) turning the connections off then back on again, now I was basically pulling the battery every two hours...on my NEW phone....I didn't like this at all...then I came here and read this thread about updating the OS...THANK GOD...no more battery pulls...and what an incredible little device...great directions, down to the time it took to do it all...you have made a believer out of me...and sure type is the best thing ever, I just had to learn to turn my brain off for what was popping on the screen, once you do that you can type a novel...Thank you again!!!

Does this version of software allow GPS in BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps?

I know some providers lock the GPS function out so that is why I am wondering.

Thanks!

No - an OS upgrade can not unlock the GPS if the carrier (e.g., Verizon) has locked it down for use with a specific nav app they sell/want you to use.

Hey everyone. New to BB's and this site as well. I got myself and my wife the 8130 via Sprint and it seems to be running great. We've had them about 3 days now. I have dl'd a few interesting programs. Didn't know much about these devices and know I realize that I know less than I thought. I just wanted to know what a first time user should do to increase the capabilities it. I already have opera mini and figured out how to operate most of the features of the phone. And found some disappointing things as well, lack of a flash player. Anything ya'll can tell me would be a big help.
Thanks

You're in the wrong place to ask a general question like this...content here is supposed to be at least somewhat related to the OS upgrade.

You should do some looking in the Aftermarket SW forum, the Media forum, the GPS forum, etc., and of course peruse posts here in the 8100 series forum.

ALso review the Blackberry FAQ (link to it at the top of this web page.

I am on verizon and I do not like the idea of locked down software. So last night I downloaded the USCC os listed at the beginning of this thread and followed the directions. After everything the phone looks the same (verizon startup logo and all) I cannot tell if it swapped to the USCC os and now when I plug the phone in it doesn't ask to update. Did I somehow get an updated verizon os? Version numbers in about are v4.3.0.97 platform 3.1.0.51. Also, does the pearl support dual nam using the uscc or sprint os?

Thank you for your replies.

It will always say verizon on it. The new OS wont unlock anything that VZW has locked down.

Today I tried to tether my Verizon Pearl w/USC .97 and I'm getting an error "There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)".

Has anyone else had problems with tethering and this .97 OS?

I figured it out. I am on BES now and I have a forced password. VZAccess Manager does not know how to deal with the password. If I connect to BB Desktop first, it asks for the password, then I can run VZAccess Manager and it works.

No differences noted other than VZW has a different sample video...I would say not worth doing anything if you're already on .97 from US Cellular.

Nope...based on posts from others who have. I have better things to do than "upgrade" to the same OS I already have loaded!

Is there a list of "what's changed" when a new OS version is released? If so, where can it be found?

Actually just found that posted and added it to the VZW thread below in this forum...scan down and you'll see the thread on the Verizon OS update.

Hey guys, this post has been really helpful.

But has anyone decided what the best OS is? Is it .60, .81, or .97? I just bought my Pearl last week and want to do the proper things to maximize my BB. What do you professional blackberry users think?

Some important things for me are:
-Vid Cam,
-Being able to watch videos (youtube, etc)
-streaming radio
-stereo blue tooth

Sorry, I'm a n00b but am really excited to finally have a good phone.

Just follow the Support links from verizonwireless.com. I installed it--all went well. I haven't noticed any difference from the .81 I was using.

.60 will give you the most FPS when using your video camera to record.

You'd need to downgrade. Find the older version of your choice and install it. Then uninstall the newer versions and run Application Loader. It will downgrade it.

Verizon will only have the current release available for download.

Older versions (though newer than the original VZW .60 release) are available from the other carriers...Telus (.65), Sprint (.71?), and Alltel (.81).

See here in the North America section.

Telus is the oldest (though newer than Verizon), followed by Sprint, and then Alltel.
