Default 8130 Os: 4.3.0.97/4.3.0.170 - 01-29-2008, 09:05 PM

Software For BlackBerry 8130 Wireless Handheld (TM) BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.3.0.170 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.3.0.170
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.3.0.97
* Software Platform: 3.1.0.51
* File name: 8130uEFS_PBr4.3.0_rel170_PL3.1.0.51_A4.3.0.97_USCC .exe
* File size: 97.29MB

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...B58CE00D1194C9

Select Blackberry 8130 from the dropdown and click Next. Then click the "Download" link that appears at the bottom of the page.

Instructions for installing on any CDMA 8130 from any carrier:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2, or Version 4.3, and can be downloaded Click Here. or from the AllTel site linked above.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

Previous version OS is located here.

Woe is me...installed the new OS, renamed selected COD files as I have w/previous OS installs to remove unnecessary items, started upgrade, and at the last step before data is restored, I have a white screen with:

App Error 23
Reset

on it.

:(

I pressed the trackball and the red light came on and it tried to restart again (hour glass)...and the same App Error 523 Reset message appeared again.

On the lighter side, the error message is in such small font that I had to get a magnifying glass to read it...

Oh well, full backup available on the PC, off to wipe and reload land.

Strange I deleted all the themes, media, languages and VAD files and did not have any problems.

The only things that were out of my ordinary process were:

- Empower was listed as a Downgrade in the list of apps, so I unselected it
- I had renamed two cods w/"fasteuropean" in their names...I named them back for the reload (completing now).

Hourglass...hourglass...hourglass...waiting...

App error 523.

Methinks operator error in the cod-ing.

Time to go see what I f'd up.

Oops...I had accidentally renamed net_rim_platform_resource__en.cod. I guess that must be important.

Yup. That appears to have been it. Another wipe/reload later and restoring my call logs, etc., from my very recent backup, and then will be restoring data via USB sync, and reloading apps.

Fun way to spend an otherwise calm evening.

Nothing yet...but after my late-night screw-up, I haven't really spent any time doing anything other than reloading everything.

One small thing - likely all in my mind, but the special characters menu (accessed from the */SYM key when in a field) looks different - like it's displayed smaller and tighter on screen.

Likely just something different in my settings for the display font that I haven't noticed...

Maybe it's my imagination but after my restore I gained 4mb of free space. I do softreset regularly and had just done one before the update.

Hmm, after the update, Google Sync no longer works. When I try to sign in, it tells me that the certificate isn't trusted and then tries to access my keystore. I put in my keystore password and then it tells me that IT Policies restrict it from installing the certificate. Anyone else seen this?

** Update **
Everything's working fine now. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Sync, but it still gave me the error messages. Me being my OCD self, I wiped the handheld and reinstalled Google Sync, restored my data, etc. Things are looking good.

Its working fine for me. Whenever I update the OS, that is one of the things that requires being setup again, but its working fine.

Anyone who's upgraded had issues, prior to the upgrade, with dropping signal from 1XEV down to 1X or 1x? Since the upgrade, have you noticed an improvement?

I've got the 8130 on Sprint and like the device quite well, but I have to cycle the radio on an off multiple times a day to get EVDO. I've read a few posts where this is an issue for other and wanted to know if upgrading to the latest version of the OS was worth the effort.

I live in a known fringe EVDO area, and still jump in and out of coverage. But all phones do that here, so I don't consider it an issue. The upgrade is fairly painless though, so I would give it a shot to see if it helps you.

I just may have to try that out. I'm in a pretty consistent EVDO area and my 8830 stays connected just fine. We'll see.

Full screen video is more reliable for me...w/.81 I would sometimes be unable to get back to full-screen if used any controls while playing a video...so far .97 goes back to full screen smoothly if I use controls to rewind or FF while watching a movie.

Why is the official Verizon Wireless software download website so slow in posting these software updates? They haven't even posted the last update from AllTel yet.

Because carriers won't release updates unless it seriously improves/fixes the device. It takes too much time and money to test and release these incremental updates. OS 4.5 is probably in testing now though with all carriers. I'm just glad RIM gives us the ability to update our phones regardless of carrier. That's a big step up from Palm and the reason why I left that platform.

To add on...Verizon won't post another carrier's update. If/when they do post an update it would be to fix issues specific to VZW customers (like an incompatibility with VZNav), or to fix issues that their customers are complaining about that wouldn't be fixed by having them upgrade to an existing release from another vendor.

The last time I called VZW for support (I know, a silly thing to do) one of the things they asked was "Have you upgraded to the latest release from another carrier, and did that help?".

I agree w/the above comment that the next update likely to come from VZW will be OS 4.5 release, which includes Docs To Go, among other juicy bits.

Hmmm, I don't think its the upgrade - My Alltel .81 release is working fine now on m.youtube.com without pauses, a week ago it was pausing. Maybe Verizon changed something.

Thanks, that's interesting...it is odd that others on Verizon were getting the pause while others weren't, just a few weeks ago.

Oh well...it's gone, so server or otherwise, I'm a happier camper.

Yeah, I'm running .97 now.

You're pretty lucky to not have to run the VZW OS for weeks waiting for an upgrade...

I used John's excellent instructions in this thread...had already been doing some COD removal but his helped me to really clean things up.

Welcome to Pearl-dome. Next step is you'll want to order a Freedom Keychain 2000 GPS puck...amazing little device, review of it in the review forum here.
