Start with a battery pull while the device is on. If that doesn't work you might consider cleaning it (Debris might have gotten under the contact).

For cleaning see:HOW TO: Clean the Trackball on your Pearl 8100

Good Luck!

This started happening to me a few days ago too. I've done a couple battery pulls and it works for a while then stops after the phone sits any length of time. I guess the track ball could use a cleaning, but I find it odd it just started doing this 2 days ago..

I haven't upgraded the OS in a long time so that might be a problem. Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem - I can't move the cursor left. Can move up, down and right no problem, can click. But I can't move it left at all. Really makes the device quite useless in certain respects. Anyone experience similar problems?

I'm assuming you have an 8100 (and not the 8700c that shows in your profile?)

If so, here's the fix:

Press and hold the mute key on the top of the device. This will put it in standby and lock the keys. Then push down on the trackball as if you were clicking an icon and at the same time roll the ball in the direction it doesn't work. Try this a few times and then go in all directions.

This should free up whatever is stuck between the trackball and the roller. Once it's freed up simply tap the mute key again to unlock and all should be well. This is the fix that RIM suggests.

Thanks for the tip - it fixed my problem for about 10 mins, and now its no longer scrolling left and that fix isn't any help.

Any other suggestions?

I even found a site detailing how to remove the trackball and blew the whole thing out with compressed air. No luck there either.
