| Can they tell when you tether?? Please Login to Remove! I have International BB Service from ATT. So far, for my US usage of tethering, there has been no additional charge. All part of the unlimited plan I have. But after being in Asia for a few weeks, I am seeing many many megabytes of "Pay per use" data charges on my bill. I called ATT, and they said it must be a mistake because 1)they do not see any such charges on their system and 2) I have an unlimited BB plan which includes all data.
But I am worried I may get my bill next month with about $600 worth of data charges. I did notice that when I use the tethering, the data shows up as wap.cingular, whereas non-tethered data shows up only under BB Data. So maybe ATT or the international carriers have a way of telling when we tether???? | | Offline

| Technically, I think with ATT you have to pay extra for tethering. I think some have gotten away with it but some don't. | | Offline

To add to what John wrote above, ezrunner has posted to the effect that AT&T is doing some sort of spot checking. Search on him to see exactly what he wrote, or perhaps he will see this and comment again.

For sure if they see you using tons of data minutes (tethering) what they do is cut off your service if you don't add the tethering plan. Nice. After using Tmob I could never go back to VZN myself.

| its $15 a month extra for everyone but Tmo. They all can check the usage (if you are tethering for any length of time you will be using ALOT more data than a normal BB browser or email. So in theory they can check the usage that way. I know when i tether on VZW and use my Slingbox i use several hundred MB in a few hours.
VZW doesnt necessarily cut you off from data if you go over your 5gb either, they cut your speed in half for the first few infractions then they cancel your data plan.

| There is a way around paying the extra on AT&T - works like a charm, as stated the only way they can tell that you're doing so is when they large spikes in your data at times. There are many things you could tell them this was due to though. | | Offline

| lol possibly, though i much prefer ATT myself. VZW is nice, but they limit too much for my tastes. There is a rumor in some of their data circles they will consider it a breech of contract if you use Sling on their network. | | Offline

| Wow - I did not know that. Not sure how that could be considered a breech of contract? That's rather interesting, I guess I don't put it past them though. All of the carriers are pretty crappy, it's just a matter of who's the lesser of the evils. | | Offline

| But other than data use, can they tell you are tethering?
I only used 5MB while traveling, and my total BB valid usage was 10MB. So clearly no spike there. I justed thethered to make it easier to reply to some emails.
Is there some different access mode you use when tethering? | | Offline
