Angry edge not EDGE; BES not BIS

Please Login to Remove!

I've spent day on this without success. Can anyone suggest any hints? The story so far:

(1) Bought "refurb" BB 8100 Pearl from eBay vendor (appeared reputable, good feedback, huge lot of devices to move)

(2) Set up new account with Rogers, with voice and also BB data service

(3) *** PHONE shows "edge", instead of "EDGE", which means I get SMS, but not data network,

(4) Placing my SIM card into a different BB 8100 at the Rogers store works correctly: I see "EDGE" in that other BB, so it seems the SIM is setup properly.

(5) Putting another person's (correctly working!) SIM card into my BB does not work, i.e. shows "edge" in my device, not "EDGE"

(6) The Rogers store tried resending the setup info from the switch multiple times (on the phone with a technician controlling the switch, I think) without success

(7) The Rogers store thought that the 4.2 software could be the problem "cause it hasn't been released in Canada, except for the 8110" (seems like an unlikely guess to me, but what the heck) so I left the phone with The Rogers store for a day, while they loaded on the "Rogers-approved" OS; same result: "edge" instead of "EDGE". Since it didn't work, they restored to v4.2

(7) At this point, my hunch (after searching the BBForum) is this is an "IT Policy locked" phone. So...

(8) I installed Destkop Manager (selecting BIS, not BES) and also 8100M_PBr4.2.1_rel181_PL2.3.0.85_A4.2.1.109_Rogers _Wireless.exe ( a recent Rogers version, I found mentioned on another thread). I deleted Vendor.xml, and also added the Registry key for the "policy.bin" as mentioned at BBFaq. Connected the phone, selected complete wipe without backup (nothing to save anyway, and I don't want to take a chance in "saving" the IT Policy, assuming it exists). Waited patiently, no errors on the installation.

(9) I now have a WAP browser (which I did NOT have before) but I still have "edge" instead of "EDGE". The WAP browser does connect and work. I also noticed that there are "Service Book"s installed (there were none before).

(10) Thinking maybe I missed something, I tried using JL_CMDR. I wiped the device all the way to "507 on white screen",

(11) I deleted and reinstalled 4.2.1.109, removed the policy.bin key in the registry (just to see if I get a different result, deleted vendor.xml (again).

(12) Then (after a few minutes panic, since the Desktop Manager would not connect to a device showing the 507 screen) used loader.exe /nojvm to reload 4.2.1.109.

(13) Same result! I have "edge" not "EDGE", I have WAP browser that seems to work (which I didn't have before).

Have I missed something?

Other "hints", these may be Red Herring but I'm a BB noob so I don't know:

- Options --> Advanced Options, has an option for "Enterprise Activation" (don't know if this is normal or not for a phone not intended for BES)

- When running setup wizard, screen 13 only gives two options:
[ ] I want to use a work email account with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server
[ ] I want to skip email setup

(I was expecting/assuming I should have an option for non-corporate email, to set up POP or IMAP? This is my first BB so I am only guessing but don't know for sure).

- Options --> Advanced Options --> Applications --> BB 4.2 Core Applications Properties has some "questionable" entries (at least, to me, as a noob):

- net_rim_bb_securitymonitor
- net_rim_bb_enterpriseconfig

Any help would be much appreciated.

BTW, just to eliminate "the obvious"

Yes, I am trying this in an area where "EDGE" coverage is available (mid-town Toronto). As noted above, using my SIM in another device gave "EDGE" immediately.

Wow. You've already tried all I would try. Does it say "data connection refused" at all or just edge?

John, it just says "edge".

Although, I did see "data connection refused" when I first got the phone and installed my FIDO SIM, but since that SIM did not have a data plan, I was not at all surprised or concerned.

Now that I have the Rogers SIM, I do not see "data connection refused" (which is a step in the right direction, I think) but only get "edge".

Another "hint" (maybe?) This phone appears to be from ORANGE, UK, originally. When it powers up I see the Orange splash screen for a moment, and when I complete the reset, I have a message waiting, which "welcomes me to the Orange network".

Now, this leads me to wonder: where is the splash screen and default message coming from? I would have thought that wiping the phone and installing the Rogers package would have eliminated all that; the fact some "original data" survived leads to the possibility that the wipe function is not as complete as I thought it would be.

Put another way: if an Orange splash screen can survive a data/OS wipe, maybe some policy that prevents "EDGE" access could also survive a wipe too.

You can't get rid of the splash screen. I don't know of anything else, software-wise, that would prevent EDGE.

Default Data service on? (On the Phone)

If you go to Options > Mobile Network

Make sure that your Data Service is on. That should turn you service on so that edge changes to EDGE. Try a Hard reset after that. Pulling your battery out while your phone is still on, leave it out for 30 sec and the put it back in. It will take a little longer to turn on but that should also help.

I would think after a wipe and reload that that option would be turned on by default.

Thanks, (sorry I didn't mention this already)

I checked Options --> Mobile Network and it is set to "ON". (just double-checked. Yup, it is ON).

I tried pulling the battery for 30 seconds (before, just tried again). Nope, still get "edge", instead of "EDGE".

I noticed when the Rogers store guy was trying this, he would pull the battery and then tell the technician (on the phone) "OK, the batter is out, send it again.... OK, thanks, I'll put the batter back in now." So I'm wondering if I should try and get Rogers to send "it" (whatever "it" is) while the battery is out? Just a guess (I'm grasping at straws here).

It shouldn't be that difficult. Something is up with the device. I would look for a refund. If you can put the same sim card in another device and it works, that's a good sign that something is not right.

Another possible clue?

When rebooting (after battery pull), just after the "Orange" spash screen, there is screen that says "Verifying Security Software..." and counts from 0% to 100%, then disappears.

Is that "normal", or does that indicate an "Enterprise Secured" BB?

I also bought from Ebay vendor located in Montreal, their eBay store name is "tanstartrade". Their return postal address on the shipment was:

TAN STAR TRADE
2059 L-ESPERANCE
MONTREAL QC H2K 4P5

Sending another email to them now.

Their first response was not helpful; in response to a detailed email, they simply said "you have to setiing ti up first, try the set up wizard, try manual set up." Hopefully they will give a little more effort this 2nd time.

Try registering the phone on the network again.

Goto Options -> Advanced Options -> Host Routing Table

Find the bolded item in the list and click the menu button and select "Register". If there is nothing listed, try clicking menu and register and see if that helps.

Let us know if that helps. It could be your phone is not registered properly on the network. You may have to send your self the service books after you get EDGE but this has fixed EDGE problems on my phone in the past.

Good luck.

SIB

Thanks SIB.

I have tried that "Register Now" before, just tried again.

Currently, the HRT has zero entries, it simply says * No Entries

When I do this: Menu --> Register Now it says "Registration message sent!"

Dumb question: what is supposed to happen after the "Registration message" is sent? I don't see anything obvious happening.

Unfortunatly, without an EDGE connection the register probably won't do anything.

Thanks John.

Just re-reading SIB's post, he says to "select the bold entry" and then register it.

But I don't have any entries (except for "* No Enties *").

Does anyone know from where and when the "routing entries" get set? Are they set when you access the EDGE network, or must the be setup BEFORE you access the EDGE network?

BTW, another possible clue I just noticed: when the phone is booting after a battery pull, it DOES show "GSM" (i.e. capital letters) for a few seconds, before switching to "edge" (lower case).

Another noob question: what exactly is the difference between "edge" and "EDGE"? Using "edge", the WAP browser works, so some data is getting through, although at a painfully slow trickle. Does "EDGE" give me high speed data? Is there another browser besides the WAP browser, which magically appears when EDGE is active?

I had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. Here's what happened:

I had purchased a new Rogers Pearl n December 2007. Called Rogers and added a BB data plan to my voice account. All was OK.

A month later, I moved my BB SIM to a new Curve and put an non-blackberry enabled SIM in the Pearl

A couple weeks later, I called Rogers and added a BB data plan to the SIM I had been using for voice only in the Pearl. A few minutes after activating the BB data, GSM changed to edge (lowercase) but no data. I waited a while a tried the usual - pull the battery, etc. Nothing, it still showed edge. I created am account at https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=rogers and entered the phone IMIE and PIN and I was in business.

Have you logged into the Rogers BIS?

What is the APN set to?

Settings->advanced->TCP

APN should be blank for Blackberry data

You might also check under mobile network that preferred is set to Rogers

Thanks lauriem,

I had not tried to login to the BB setup site, as I had understood they had set that up already in the store.

Nevertheless, I tried just now, and got the following message:

"An account already exists for that PIN"

Also: APN is blank (although I had tried "internet.com" earlier, based on the FAQ, but it didn't work).

Options --> Mobile Network:
Data Services: ON
Mobile Network: ROGERS
Network Selection Mode: Automatic

I just tried Network Selection: Manual, it scanned, and found exactly one network: Rogers, which I selected. No different result, though, still have "edge" instead of "EDGE".
