Cool Receiving MMS instead of SMS

Please Login to Remove!

My buddy and I both have T-Mobile Pearl's. His message plan allows to receive SMS, but he is charged for MMS. We have tried every option we can think of to send an SMS via EMAIL -- his receives it as MMS, mine is received as SMS.

I am sending via [email address] (also tried Teleflip.com with the same results) using plain text, no footer. We have both my phone and his in the same EMAIL as recipients. Mine arrives SMS, his as MMS. The only significant difference might be some apps he has, plus he has a different theme loaded. Yes, we tried the option to not use "theme controlled" on the "SMS and EMIAL inboxes" option.

Any thoughts on how to EMAIL him and have it arrive as SMS only every time?

Thanks in advance!
Kevin

I wasn't even aware you can EMAIL someone and have it arrive as a text message. Is this possible?

For T-Mobile, try [email address], or for anybody (I think) try [email address], where xxxxxxxxxx is your 9-digit telephone number. Any fees associated with receiving text messages are yours of course.

Mine shows up as a text message, as it should.

I tested it on mine. If it is all plain text is came through as an SMS, anything else came through as MMS.

Did some more testing. Plain text over 160 characters results in it being an MMS. Under 160 SMS.

Thanks for testing.

We have two phones, both T-Mobile Pearl's. One gets SMS, the other MMS. And it's regardless of message length.

Not sue why that is. I sent myself about 20 messages of various length, format and content and it handeld each one correctly.

Unfortunatly this would not be a BlackBerry issue. The BlackBerry only displays what it is sent. It does not make the decision if something is SMS or MMS so you may want to contact T-Mobile.

Can I assume your friend is on Pre-Paid? If so, that may be the issue. Some carriers convert emailed SMS to MMS on pre paid accounts to bill the user.

Thanks for the thought. We are both on 2-year contracts. I'm not sure what you mean by "pre-paid" -- we both pay each month, according to usage. I happen to be on a family plan and I pay an extra $20/month for unlimited messaging. He is on an SMS-only plan. For MMS, he pays something like $0.15 for each received message.

If you both have Pearls why don't you just use PIN messaging? No cost to either one of you.

We are trying to setup alerts coming via EMAIL generated by an HP Openview notification.

I've tried a half-dozen SMS servers -- all are acting the same. I'm thinking the only way this can happen is if T-Mobile is changing them somehow -- because his plan makes him pay for MMS, mine doesn't. And if so, that's pretty low. But I can't come up with any other answer as to why these SMS web sites (and my own local, plain text EMAIL) are being delivered to him as MMS.

Interestingly, if I SMS him directly from my phone to his, it does arrive as SMS. It is just SMS messages sent via EMAIL that get converted to MMS.

I guess we are stuck!
