Default gmail - 03-01-2008, 09:17 AM

I understand that there may be 2 ways to set up gmail.
One is a push -I think thats where my gmail would automatically come in.
I am not sure of the other but it would be where I would have to get it .

I was wondering which one is best?

I havent set up my bb yet I am doing a complete charge on my battery,,I am going to do 3 charges and discharges as per the battery instructions on this web site.

Thanks for help

Allan

The Push email is the best, that is what has made RIM famous.

The other GMail's own app for the BB. it does not allow audible alerts, etc. and you have check it to see if new mail is available.

I beg to differ. In Gmail, choose settings and check the box for alerts. Then in your Profile there should be an entry for Gmail. Set your ringtone there. That's where is was on my 7130e and now my 8130.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8130/4.3.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/106)

If you mean in the Gmail ap, there is no push. The ap checks for mail about every 10 minutes.

If you have blackberry data plan, you can set up from the handheld or from the BIS web page at your carrier's web site. On the handheld, look for setup wizard or setup internet email icons (if you have blackberry data service).

Gmail app is updated since I last used it, it did not have notifications then, and I believe it still does not have homescreen notifications, visually, on the device. Or does it?

Yes, it puts a little star or flower on the Gmail Icon. The icon is so daggoned small I can't tell what it is. I suffer terribly from short arm disease. (If you don't know what that is, ask your grandfather.)

i just started using the gmail app on my 8130 and i cant get any type of ringtone/vibrate notification.

in the gmail app, i've gone to menu > more > settings, then checked the last box to notify me when there is new mail

then in my profile > adv. options > normail (acitve) > Gmail - new mail, out of holster is set to tone, i have the ring tone that i want selected, and the volume is on medium

its the same if i'm actually in the applicaiton, or not. i still have my gmail active through the BIS (and those alerts work fine), but would that matter? the mail arrives in the gmail app fine (within 5-10 minutes of being sent), but nothing happens. the icon does update letting me know, and as lazy as this sounds, i dont want to have to pull my phone out of my pocket and look at the screen everytime i want to see if i have new email.

thanks
dan

If all else fails, try pulling the battery for a reset. Honest, it works fine here. I even use the Rinkety-Dinkety Eudora newmail.wav on my bb.

well, i guess i just wasnt giving it enough time. even though the emails were showing up in the gmail app without me hitting refresh, the actual alert didnt come for about 30 minutes or so afterwards. i knew people had talked about delays, but i figured the alert would happen when the new email arrived.

thanks

RIM push Gmail is normally instant and you don't have to tell it to refresh.
