Well, I had the same problem, all i did was call AT&T and reported my problem and they sent me a brand new Pearl.
They said you have a year since the purchase of the phone to report a default and they WILL send you a brand new phone.
But you have to remember to save all your numbers (and all other apps to your sim card) because new phone is...well, new.
You also have to send your old phone to AT&T, which is really easy...they explain everything realy good.
