So this is the 2nd time this has happened. I went to look for a text someone had sent me and poof! ALL of my MMS and SMS texts are gone, all my emails are still in my messages folder.
I checked to see if perhaps I needed to look in the SMS folder specifically...all of my folders are empty.
Anyone know what is going on? And more importantly how to fix it?

Your device is too low on free memory, or out of memory completely.
Delete some unneeded things (themes, ringtones, applications, etc..) from device memory to create more free space.

In there, it will tell you how much memory you have. Also, make sure you close your apps when you are not using them.

Also, don't use the application switcher too often.

It says I have 8670272 file free, is that small?
I was using the app switcher last night...it just randomly will ERASE all your messages?
This isn't like 1 or 2 it is ALL of them...

Wait, what's wrong with the application switcher?

It doesn't "QUIT" an application. It merely moves it to the background, still running. This takes up needed memory. If you need to switch back and forth, by all means use it, but when you are through with an application use the menu key and close it. this frees up the memory it is using.

Does simply pressing the power button keep the applications open too? That's what I always use to get back to the main menu, but it would make sense that they're still open, considering that the previous position pops up when I click on the icon.

Vernon, I just purchased a Pearl for my daughter. Within two days she was complaining about the same thing. I assumed it was a memory issue but was confused because I knew she only had the apps that came with the phone. As it turned out she had taken pictures and stored them on the device prior to installing a memory card. When I check her free memory it was 0!!. Once she moved all the pics to her card her free memory dramatically increased. No issues since. I think RIM would be wise not to allow any media storage on their phones and default media to a card only. Not sure if thats's possible but makes sense to me. Good luck.

That would pretty much force their customers to buy a memory card in order to do things that have been standard in phones for about five years now, and that other phones offer for free. Not a good business plan.

Also, wouldn't it be smart to make the "My call and text logs are getting deleted" a sticky in every device's section on the forum? It would clear up so many reposts (my first post included).

I take back everything I said. The Pearl is back down to '0' bites file free..hmmm I'll 'search' and see what I can find. Thanks

I went down to 6MB when I first got my pearl, and it started deleting everything on me as well..
Although it seems we shouldn't have to, I went through the Optimize your BB thread, went up to 36+mb free space, and have NEVER had a problem since.

Also, Regular battery pulls are a must on pearls. About once a week you take out the battery with the phone powered on, leave it out for a few seconds (they say 30 or more) and then put it back in... I gain 10mb a free space back every time I do this...
After a while it just becomes a routine, and you never really see it as a "problem", or at least I don't anymore lol

Here's the thread mizditz was talking about. It works wonders. I've got 35 MB free and haven't even deleted any of the preloaded pictures or ringtones.

I did the short term memory fixes and she is able to keep fairly steady at about 14 meg on her Pearl, still not enough, but it has helped. I'm going to tackle the thread you posted this weekend when I have a bit more time to deal with it. It's encouraging to hear how much your memory has jumped after doing the fixes. Thanks for your help.

I support 300 blackberries... 7250 through Pearl and World Edition. (i.e. - super old to super new.) There are 3 pearls on my network and all 3 do the same thing. (SMS & Call Logs randomly disappear) After a lengthy conversation with tech support, I was told:

"This is a known issue that ONLY happens with the Blackberry Pearl. If you set your device to automatically shut off daily for at least 5 minutes, it seems to help but at this time, there is no fix and no ETA for a fix. When a fix is determined, it will be released although it is not yet known how it will be distributed either."

I set the 3 devices to shut down for 5 minutes each evening and they are all still having the randomly disappearing call log and message problem.

In other words...

There's no fix. If you intend on keeping pictures or messages, save them before your device has a chance to eat them.

Sorry Murra, but that's not true.

The original problem has probably been solved by now, but to all future readers, know that there is a fix.

First of all, you should go to options-security options-general settings and disable content compression. Then you need to disable a lot of unnecessary features that are taking up a lot of your memory. With your memory freed up you should be able to keep your messages for months.
