SoftReset No Worky with 4.5 -
04-09-2008, 06:09 PM
I just came to the sad realization that SoftReset does not work with OS 4.5. I loaded the much discussed 4.5.0.18 and tried to SoftReset from GeekandProud with no luck...all it would do is throw an uncaught exception. Anyone else with this behavior or is it just me?

I am sure you are correct but thought I would let those that are huge fans of the little app that it won't work before they get frustrated.

All,
I thought I would post my pathetic work around for the SoftReset not working.
Set up:
1. Set SoftReset Download page as bookmark (this is so you can reload SoftReset easily, also note you can do this with any app but SoftReset is nice and small)
2. Install SoftReset
When you need to reboot without battery pull follow these steps:
1. Open SoftReset - It must be open for this to work
2. Press Call End (Red Phone used to Hang Up on a Call) - do not press cancel as that will close the app not put it in the background)
3. Go to Options - Advanced Options - Applications
4. Find SoftReset and Select "Delete"
5. After deleting the BB will offer to Reboot to complete the deletion
6. Click "Yes" or "Reboot" or whatever is necessary to reboot
After it reboots, I reinstall SoftReset and start the process over so I can use this method even if I am out of coverage areas.
If you did not know, this is essentially how SoftReset works in the first place. It installs a small prog to your BB that has parameters to require reboot upon deletion. Then SoftReset sends a command to delete the prog and you get a nice message (presumably caught by SoftReset and reworded for user friendliness) asking you if you want to Reboot Now or Reboot Later. After the Reboot you don't even know that this prog was ever installed, nor do you care!!!
Happy Resetting!!!

Even though I am the only one that seems to care here I thought I would post an update. Apps working correctly is my pet peev (some may say I have OCD). Anyhow, I found a way to let SoftReset work.
Background:
I noticed when I would use it to Reset it would ask if I trusted "aa_DeletetoReset" which from my previous post is a small module that SoftReset installs and deletes to force the reboot.
Troubleshooting and my realization:
Anyhow based on this Application Permission question about "trust" I thought maybe this is a default permission setting. Well low and behold, I set all of my default app settings to "Allow" and requested a reset from SoftReset and it worked. So go to Options - Security Options - Application Permissions. Click the Menu button and Select Edit Default Permissions. I selected "Allow" to everything but you may want to test to find the right combination to keep your system more secure (See note below).
Note:
Using this method may open up your device to security issues because the Default Permissions are set to protect the average user and ensure certain functions are prevented that could be used for malicious purposes. Please use this fix at your own risk and I am not responsible for any/all issues that you may encounter as a result of changing any Default Permissions.

Also, devices on BES may not be able to set these permissions as you describe. Good work and thanks for the update on this!

A lot of these applications will probably come once 4.5 becomes available officially.

Hopefully so. The guy who made the app says on his web site that he knows it doesn't work with 4.5, but he doesn't have the time to work on it.

I fixed my problem. Removed all extra apps. Then upgraded and reformatted the media card. Added some apps back one at a time to see what happens. Didn't reinstall color pearl or softreset. Telenav seems to work OK. Haven't put LexSpell back yet.

I too like this app but this seems a little cumbersome when a battery pull does the same thing!!

Look at the date on this thread...
When this originally started, the 4.5 version is different than what we have now. Mine is also good now using the soft reboot with the .81 and worked with .69 and .55...
Now, if we can just get all our carriers to publish the newer 4.5 version - that's what I am waiting on....

My pearl 8130 had this issue after upgrading to 4.5. I found a link on berry review that helped me fix it. Go to:
SoftReset OS 4.5 Fix | BerryReview.com »
Haven't had an issue yet. You have to go to option > applications > softreset > edit permissions. Then set all to allow.

actually there is a 'fix' that doesnt require deleting the app and reinstalling or opening up your device to sec. issues. All you need to do is alter the permissions of the "aa_DeletetoReset" module - take a look at my posts within this forum I have posted an acceptable workaround that does just this. hope it helps

Just another data point - I've used SoftReset on all versions of 4.5 that I've had on my Pearl and never had any issues w/it working.
Currently on 4.5.0.97 (beta) and have used pretty much every 4.5.0.XX OS version released for my Pearl, and SoftReset has always worked.

Perhaps a bit easier than running SoftReset and then altering the permissions on the little tidbit it installs is instead to install two tiny applications to the blackberry for this actual purpose.
I think it avoids a few steps, and doesn't require you to look for the modules and alter, but it does work on the same principal about permission and OS 4.5
There is perhaps an alternative to having any version of SoftReset at all (thanks to Alan Penner, it was awesome on 4.3)
Go to "options", "advanced", "applications" and select a small application you either tend not to use or even a tiny application you have installed to the blackberry for the purpose of initiating a hard reset.
use the menu key once you have selected the application to bring up "edit permissions"
choose "edit permissions" and then change all the properties to "deny" Under OS 4.5 (at least the Rogers version 4.5.0.102 I am running on my T-Mobile 8120) when properties are made more restrictive on some applications, the OS prompts a window that requires the user to "reboot now" or "reboot later"
My understanding would be that "reboot" = a hard reset. (Though I am just guessing on this one and happy to be corrected)
Select "reboot now" and off you go!
If you have two tiny and unused programs installed, you can keep changing one to "deny"
and resetting the other tiny applicatoin to "allow/custom". The next time the device needs to be restarted, you'll have a program set to "allow" that you can change to "deny" and start the process of initiating a hard reset all over again. (The OS won't require a reboot if you make the permissions less restrictive.)
BTW, the program I first started using for this purpose is "blight", which I bought from the crackberry store. While it isn't so useful as a light (I turn on the "always on" option of the video camera for that purpose, which is brighter) it makes a perfect tiny program for this purpose.
I look forward to hearing if (1) this does the hard reset we are all looking for and, (2) that it works for others, and under which versions of OS 4.5.
Good luck!
