i've installed the 4.2.1.189 OS but my pearl still doesn't seem to recognise a 2gB card.

is there another step i'm missing?

After installing he card do a hard reboot. Thsi is down by pulling the battery out of the phone when it is on, wait for 30 seconds put the battery back and the phone will boot. You should see a white screen with an hour glass it will come back on you should then be able to see the media card.

try formatting the card.
