Welcome to BBF.

Get a MicroSD media card and insert it in the slot under the battery. Then go to Options >Media Card and Format the card and enable Mass Storage Mode. Then you can just use windows to drag and drop your mp3 files to the music folder on the Media card.

Is the formatting necessary or is it (the memory card) good to go right out of the box?

the BlackBerry should create a file structure that it needs on the memory card without formatting. if it doesnt work out of the box, then format it. welcome to the forums.

Themes change the look and feel of your device, they are not ringtones. most types of music files all the way back to midi can be used.

I thought the directory structure was created during formatting. I always format the card. I reformat it when I do major OS upgrades i.e. 4.2.0 to 4.3.0, etc.

ive never actually formatted a Sandisk Card, that includes up to the 12gb. I know formatting *does* create the file structure, but shouldnt be necessary.
