I don't know what is needed for facebook, and I don't know what the 5.99 plan provides (t-zones?)

Generally, users with a generic carrier's mobile data plan can access the internet with the opera mini browser. See blackberryfaq.com for details. Browse around for other answers.

You will need to get the 19.99 plan (blackberry unlimited add on) to use blackberry branded data applications.

I wouldn't be surprised if you need the blackberry data plan for the facebook app. In fact you may -- though I'm not sure -- need the blackberry browser. I defer to others on that.

I have the t mobile plan you can go on any website from t zones including facebook however you cannot access internet from downloaded apps

I also heard t mobile does not allow there data plan on blackberrys meanind you must have the BB data plan so far nothing has gone wrong for me but I haven't got the bill yet also I had to put my sim in a older phone then go to t zones to buy the data plan then switch back to my BB and everything worked but you can also do all that on a pc a lot easier

I took for granted the OP was asking about the facebook app that is now provided to blackberrys. My mistake, maybe. If the OP has a generic data plan or t-zones or whatever and can access the facebook web site with something else (opera mini?) then I defer to others.

Online apps do not work on the 9.99 plan either.
That means no Opera Mini

Go to settings (or options depending on your theme), advanced settings, TCP settings, and set TCP to wap.voicestream.com

You don't need a username or password. You will be able to access most sites (including facebook as I usually do :P) without a data plan. Cheers

Hello all, I'm liking this forum (been lurking a couple of days) . I just have a question , I'm confused as well, so if you can access the internet through wap.voicestream.com , what's the point of paying the web browsing package ?

P.S. - I still don't have my 8100 yet it's on its way, couple days at most.

Make sure you have rebooted your phone (pulling the battery out while the BB is on) and saved those settings. If you are still not able to access the internet, call T-Mo and tell them to allow wap.voicestream.com . They sometimes need to unlock it for you (it costs nothing but they want you to call in so they can pitch you the data plan. Don't fall for it).

;) there isn't. However, if you will be using an email client or data apps, you do need to purchase the data plan. I am content with using Gmail and just surfing, so I never bought the data plan.

I can't imagine having a BB without a data plan. I don't think any work around will give you the full benefit of owning a BB.

It's true that owning a BB without the full BB plan does not allow one to take full advantage of the capabilities of the device. However, for the price tmo is offering the 8100 at (I paid 29.00 or something like that) it's an attractive option for people who want a nice, step-up phone from the standard freebie flip phone.

For what it's worth, I started out with a Samsung forget the model, didn't like it, so I traded it in on an 8100. Best decision I could have possibly made on all fronts - far nicer phone, not even close. But I had the $5.99 plan on the Samsung so I just kept it on the 8100. I can browse to any site I want, but can't use any web-enabled apps like Opera Mini. And it doesn't matter whether I set wap.voicestream.com in the APN setting or not. Either way, I can surf but that's it. That's good enough I guess. But reading this thread, I'm wondering if I even need the data plan I'm paying for. Sounds like setting the APN gets around that? Hmmm.

What exactly do you guys mean when you say that you can't use data apps with wap.voicestream.com? Do mean data apps like IM clients ? I see you say you can't use opera mini but how do you web browse then, built in browser?

I pay $19.99 per month and love it!
Never thought I needed email, but I use it more than the web, I only use web when I am checking the forum.

In my case that is correct. I've tried all sorts of apps that connect to the internet, Gmail, Opera Mini, BB's Yahoo IM, etc., and none work. But as long as I use the built-in T-Zones browser, I can surf anywhere. I think they are blocking all ports but standard http or something. Because there are a few things I also can't do in my browser, such as log in to Meebo.com. I use Meebo for all my IM and they have a nifty mobile interface, but it won't log in on my phone and I think that's why, it's trying to use some other port apparently.

wow. i am now so enlightened! i have data plan for 19.99 and use it mostly for surfing. i do enjoy my emails but can do without it. was ercently thinking of ways to thin out my almost massive phone bill (2 lines) but just couldnt allow myself to get rid of the most expensive feature (besides the service plan) which clearly is the data plan. what's a BB without the data plan right? never knew i could still surf with just the t-zones. here i thought i would have been limited only to buying ringtones n such n not the real internet. hmmm. can u feel the wheels turning? lol thanx
