just downloaded os 4.5 and need help updating my phone

i just downloaded os 4.5 desktop manager and i was wondering if someone can give me steps on how to update my 8100 pearl handheld device

JSanders 06-21-2008 07:30 PM

Welcome to the BBforums.

To update what? Your handheld device Operating System?

See the Sticky Note at the top of this 8100 section, highlighted in yellow. Look at the OS for the 8100 only.

irvin 06-21-2008 07:35 PM

yeah im new here so....i need help updating my handheld operating system

John Clark 06-21-2008 07:37 PM

The Operating System is not contained in the Desktop Manager download. The Operating system is a *separate* download that installs in addition to Desktop Manager. Desktop Manger will then install the OS to your device. See the thread that JSanders linked above.

Downloading Desktop Manager 4.5 at the moment
What are the main changes it has over 4.3?

JSanders 06-21-2008 07:39 PM

Linked here: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...dafone-de.html

All the instructions you need to upgrade your OS are in that first post, and as long as you follow those instructions exactly as written and in order, you will be fine.

If your device is operating well as it is now, your being new and all as you mentioned, I would recommend leaving it be. If you need to upgrade, you have the instructions.

Good luck.

Not much change in desktop manager.

Desktop Manager will NOT upgrade your OS on the device.

NJBlackBerry 06-21-2008 07:42 PM

So downloading Desktop Manager WILL NOT upgrade the handheld OS, right?

Thanks. I am gonna grab it anyway. I know it wont upgrade the device software - thats my next mission
Judging by the speed of this download, it will be a while before I get to do the OS!!

Well, I learn something new everyday around here, but I do think the three of us got that straight... updating Desktop Manager will not upgrade the OS. At least three of us agree on this.

No. The Desktop manager is only the software to run on your pc

<EDIT>Make that 4!</EDIT>

ok. I think you will do just fine with DM 4.3 to use in upgrading, but you do as you think you need...

thefonedoc 06-21-2008 07:48 PM

Well I was just grabbing it purely to see if there is new features or UI, but that's why I was asking. Was just wondering if its even worth getting

JSanders 06-21-2008 07:51 PM

Nope, not worth it for this. Just presenting additional problems less easy to troubleshoot as you upgrade.

thefonedoc 06-21-2008 07:53 PM

OK. Cheers for that. Will abandon it for now. Have started the 8310 Vodafone 4.5.0.37 OS download. Going to check the thread now. Saw something about the beta version frying sims, but need to go back and read full thread. Has that been sorted with full release?

JSanders 06-21-2008 07:55 PM

Wait, what BB do you have, your original post stated 8100, but your profile to the left states 8310.

You need the OS for the 8310.
http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...dafone-de.html

"Most" of the fried SIM cards have come from Tmobile customers, running an 8320.

I won't guarantee anything about yours, but it would quite rare.

thefonedoc 06-21-2008 07:57 PM

I'm not the OP
Mine is definitely an 8310. Its on O2 Ireland
Have it downloaded now.
Going to give it a shot

JSanders 06-21-2008 08:00 PM

Ah, I see you are not the OP. I thought maybe you had morphed somehow. Good luck.

thefonedoc 06-21-2008 08:03 PM

Why do I start silly stuff like this at 2am!!! LOL

JSanders 06-21-2008 08:10 PM

A good OS upgrade from start should take about about an hour, according to the size of the backup and reload of messages and logs, etc. Be patient, do not unplug the USB at anytime until fully complete. The last device initialization could appear stuck, give it time.
