How much memory is too little?

First off I apologize if this has been answered somewhere. I'm usually pretty good at finding my own solutions to my questions, but this time I haven't found an answer. This is a simple one. I currently have followed every FAQ and thread about clearing up memory on my BB and I have 24mb free. But I'm wondering how much is too little?

For 24mb free, I think thats pretty good for having Jivetalk, Zelda, BBSmart Alarms Pro + Shortcuts, Google Maps, Viigo, Beyond411, Facebook, and Flipside. What can I say, I like my BB and use it for everything.

Thanks in advance.

24 mb is good. Keep it above 10mb for best performance.

I agree. I always try to keep mine in the double digits.

I like to keep over 38MB...I am usually at 44MB...wish I could get it higher. Like everyone else said 10 and up is usually adequate.

Mine hovers around 15MB, at 7MB programs will begin to stop responding. At 9MB, I usually do a soft reboot.

You must be running VERY lean. I'm around 25M free and that's up from about 18 after my last OS upgrade. Got about 8 or 9 apps loaded.

I have 4 apps (3rd party), and have used J Clarks cleaning instructions.

Thanks to all for the quick response! This gives me an idea of how much I should generally try to keep free.

You seem to have a lot of free memory! I don't have that much applications installed (6) and I thing Google Maps is the biggest one. I tried this to have some more free memory but I can't get above 15MB. How do you manage to have 30+MB?

Ulukia 06-27-2008 04:00 PM

What do I have installed?

Let's see. I have these installed.
  • Atomichelix Notify!
  • BBSmart Alarms Pro
  • BBSmart Email Viewer
  • BBSmart Shortcuts
  • BB Veesta Today (Custom)
  • Gmail
  • Google Docs
  • Google Mobile Updater
  • Google Sync
  • KeePass
  • Microsoft Live Search
  • Opera Mini
  • Rove Mobile File Manager
  • WeatherEye
  • Wikipedia (Frontend)
  • ShapeServices IM+
  • ShapeServices XPlayer

Heh, that's 17 third-party apps.
Current Memory: 13707732 Bytes (13.07 MB)

I had the same issue for the longest time until it dawned on me that I might have some pictures saved on the internal memory. Sure enough I did because the BB was set to save to the internal mem before I got my SD Card. Removed them and that took care of it. Just use Media Manager and check to see if anything is on the device. Also could be:

Try setting Device Memory Limit to 12MB and Reserved Pictures Memory to 0MB.

Thanks. However I don't hae any poctures on my SD and settings were already set as this.:-(

I wiped my BB, installed 4.5 removing any of the useless stuff and only a few 3rd party apps. I only have 18Mb of free memory which drops to ~15MB after a few days. :-(
