If you have a way to re-import or re-sync your contacts - for example by syncing with Outlook, go into Backup/Restore, select the Advanced options, select the Address Book database under Device Databases, and select Clear. This will wipe ALL Address Book entries, and then allow you to Re-sync / Import your contacts.

If the Address Book database appears greyed out, this is most likely because you're on a BES and have it syncing wirelessly. On your BlackBerry, go into Address Book, select Options and turn off Wireless Synchronization. Once you clear the Address Book database as described above, turn it back on to pull in your Contacts.

One addition to the advice from JerryD - do a battery pull once before you start, again as soon as you clear the Address Book databases and again after the sync session finishes - the practice is like magic crystals - it may not actually make a difference, but just in case it does, what the heck.
