I have the privilage of being Canadian, which means I have but one GSM carrier - Rogers, I have my 8100 from them. Is there any value in getting it unlocked? Any benefits?

Unlocking is only if you want to use it on another carrier. No point unless you're going to put another carrier's sim card in it.

I second what John Clark says; I'm with T-mobile here in the states and got my phone unlocked for a recent international trip. Plus if you ever decide to sell your phone the value goes up a bit as it isn't sim locked to just one carrier.

Plus some negotiation leverage. I had recently bought a new phone (couple of years ago) when my carrier decided to stop offering my plan and move me to a more expensive to get the services I wanted. With my phone unlocked and threatening to leave they were willing to bend a bit.

I got my 8100 and 8320 unlocked just because I could for free through T-Mobile. If I ever upgrade either one then I might be able to squeeze a few more dollars out of someone on eBay or something when I sell off the old one. Other than that, there is no reason for either of my Blackberry devices to be unlocked.

Thanks all. That pretty much confirms what I thought. And so, since I live in the land of lack of competition, and I won't be selling the phone anytime soon, locked it will stay. Hopefully Casnada gets some real competiton on the GSM spectrum sometime soon....
