Default First Blackberry, have some questions

Please Login to Remove!

First off please ignore my typos, I got a new keyboard and its awful, hopefully replacing tonight

My existing cell phone is barely working so my husband is getting his secretary's Blackberry Pearl 8100c for like 20.00, its just to hold me over till I upgrade in October.

I understand i cannot use the internet or other data useage features without a data plan, and I'm OK with that but may add it later on.

But what about standard text messaging? Currently I pay per use on my phone (10 cents each I think, I only use maybe 50 cents a month), can I do the same with the blackberry or will it cost an arm and a leg? If it will can I disable text messaging entirely so I don't recieve any?

Also, What other feaures CAN I use? Calendar, to-do list, etc? What features are totally off limits w/o a data plan?

Can I disable anything that might accidently get me charged data useage so I don't get a nasty surprise?

My carrier is AT&T/cingular, I believe the phone is unlocked. The plan would be 30.00 a month, not sure I want to do that... maybe 10.00, but not 30.00!

What I am mostly after with this phone is the internal PDA features and bluetooth capability... oh and a phone that actually works, lol.

I did look in the FAQs but I got a bit lost so I thought I would ask.

Thank you!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 9000 4.6.0.67)

Welcome. You can use all the pda functions, all the phone functions, and bluetooth without any issue. Also texting would remain exactly the same. Multimedia messaging will not work without the data plan, but just texting will.

To answer your questions about data plans.

Without a data plan, no e-mail, no internet, no blackberry messenger.

FYI...I believe AT&T just raised their text messages to 25 cents per if you don't have a text package.

It would use data, and using data without a plan is pretty expensive. With ringtones you can just connect your pearl to your computer and drag and drop them from your computer.

so i can add things right from my computer with a cable, such as ringtones or a pic of my kids without paying any data transfer fees?

I may end up adding the data pack depending on how often I find myself wanting it but not having it

Yes you can transfer files with just the cable. I definitely recommend the data package. You will wonder why you tried to do without it.

Turns out its an 8700c, so is anything different? Should I ask a mod to move my post to the correct forum area?

You'll want to visit the "general-8700-series-discussion" since this section is for the 8100 series. You'll likely get more help faster in there.

Good luck with the new phone!
