It's a safeguard, just think, you're at Starbucks or Wendy's or somewhere and the BB falls out of you pocket, if you had the lock disabled, anyone that finds it has access to you're whole life. If it's there, best case senario is they wipe the handheld and they've scored themselves a dead BB; because by this time you've already called the carrier and disabled the handheld for any futher use of course!
