Unhappy 8110 & 8120; What's the difference? - 08-24-2008, 07:40 PM

I bought a sony ericsson and it was an awesome phone.
But then, I decided to switch back to blackberry because it's more easlier for me to touch. I'm stuck between a 8110 and a 8120, what's the difference between these two phones?

If anyone can help me, please tell me some advice! Because I'm really looking forward for another blackberry!!!

I regret selling my blackberry 8100 so much!!

Hi

The 8120 has wifi and the 8110 has GPS.

You cannot add wifi to the 8110 but you can use a GPS puck with the 8120.

Hope that helps

Wifi is surfing the net for free using a wireless conection.

GPS = global positioning system used for mapping, sat nav etc.

Oh, I see. so which is better? Also, if I was to buy a wifi, 8110, does that mean that I need to pay for the wireless internet?

and "if" I get the 8120, do I have to pay for the GPS to be working? because my last phone I had, 8100, I didn't need to pay for the bbmaps. It works good if I enter the address from start to address end.

Thanks for helping me

You've got mixed up.

8120 = wifi

8110 = GPS

Wifi is free, but you will still need a BlackBerry plan for emails, BB messenger etc if you want all that. The wifi would be useful when travelling though to avoid roaming costs when surfing.

You can use GPS with BlackBerry maps or Google maps (free) providing your carrier doesn't block them. Your Blackberry data plan will cover use.

Apart from GPS and wifi the devices are practically the same. Only you can decide which is best for you.

If you are staying with the same carrier/network then they should include the BBmaps software in the OS.

Some don't include it, like Orange UK for example.

Which one is better? Honestly, if you was to be in my position what would you get? lol. I like taking people's opinion because it helps me sometimes.

I have an 8110 and love the GPS Capabilities!

I don't see any need for the 8120 Wifi... Of course if you for some reason are near a Wifi hot spot all the time or don't have an unlimited data plan on your blackberry then maybe the 8120 would be useful. But GPS makes traveling so much easier when you don't know exactly where you're going. Google Maps and Live Search are free... ATT makes you pay for ATT Navigator!

Wow, cool.... so how exactly does this GPS run? Does it talk? like, for instance, Turn left at the intersection, then turn right when you get to the stop sign. Ya` know? lol. But then, a 8120 can also go on gps too right? like if I downloaded the google maps?

SORRY; i'm just confused.

The GPS software from AT&T called AT&T Navigator is a subscription service costing $5-$10 a month. It works just as you would think actually speaking directions to you such as "Turn right on Compton St.", "Purchase crack from Tyronne in .2 miles", etc. You can also use the free GPS mapping software as well, that lacks the ability to speak and some other features.

As mentioned, yes the 8120 can connect to any Bluetooth GPS or even the GPS in someone elses phone. I prefer the 8120 because I want access to E-mail or data as much as possible. For instance, I was in Mexico a few weeks ago and my resort offered free WiFi so I was able to send pictures, answer E-mail questions from employees, stay in touch with friends and coworkers over IM (Myspace, Yahoo and AIM in my case) as well as access on-line info about all the local bars and clubs. Without the 8120s WiFi I would either have to pay HUGE international rates or have no access at all. Sure I was on vacation, but I like to stay connected.

My Sister in law uses the 8110 as the whole WiFi access spot thing isn't her thing and the 8120 was $200 more that the 8110.

If you liked your Pearl 8100, you are gonna love the improvements in the 8110 and 8120. Better digital camera, new video camera, movie player, a real iPod head phone jack (unlike the crappy one the 8100 had), WAY better music player and movie player. On flights I watch movies and at the gym I use my phone as an iPod. So while training I can listen to music and text, IM, e-mail. Its great.

About that part, the 8120 does have that correct? if i was to pay AT&T? plus the wifi?

because if the 8120 does have it, I'm buying one!!!!

vhato, I love you! <3 THANK YOU! =) you just now convince me to buy a 8120. LOL.

NO!! 8120 does not have built-in GPS. You can add a bluetooth GPS puck and use 8120 as a GPS device. Please read the earlier posts carefully...

Sorry, RIM decided to give us all a good "RIM Job" and not make a perfect device. If you want all the bells and whistles like WiFi, GPS and Camera you gotta buy the larger brick of phone like the Bold 9000. Who wants to make that sacrifice??? I know I don't wanna look like a baller in the club while sipping on some kool-aid!

Sure does!!! Comes in real handy when AT&T drops service.
