New guy back, learned a lesson -
10-13-2008, 11:14 AM
Hi all,
Back in December 07 I posted here looking for info on blackberry vs. the htc 6800 mogul from Alltel. I also posted at an htc forum and compared responses. In January I finally opted for the much hyped htc 6900 "Touch". It was a love/hate relationship. I rarely used the calander and outlook sync like I tought I would. Opera mini on that phone was great. The phone was quirky as hell! I got used to the touch screen, but never got used to it locking up, and constant problems. Its functionality as a media player and internet device was wonderful, but it's functionality as a phone was terrible. Hard to dial, poor reception and constant dropped calls.
Alltel decided to send me a replacement Touch because mine is still under warranty, so in the mean time I spoke with a Alltel store rep, who had the Touch as his work phone, and the Pearl as his personal phone. He swore by the pearl, and hated the Touch. He said that customers have had many problems with the Touch.
So after a short search I found a new Pearl for sale online and got it Friday. I like it quite a bit, but I am still getting used to it. I am going to try it out, If I like it I will keep it, and sell the Touch, if I dont like it, its back to the Touch.
So I have a couple questions...
MEMORY... I have a 4gb card in here, and while checking out some apps, I tried to DL some and after just a couple, it said insufficent memory. Can these apps not be stored on the mem card? I would like it to share this memory. If not, and I am limited to only a few apps, that is a major negative.
DELETING APPS... Why can't I delete some pre-installed apps that I dont use to clear some space? Maybe I just don't know how.
WEB BROWSER... I can get by with the bb browser and Opera mini (Opera mini is much much worse on the bb than on the touch.) But is there a browser that is considered much better than either of these?
WEATHER APP...I have weathereye, works ok, but Minneapolis is the closest city, which is more than an hour away. It also tells me wind and rain in metric. Weatherbug looks good, but Im cheap, so I'd rather stay free!
Thanks for all your help, sorry I get so wordy!

Only media can be stored on the memory card (pictures, vids, etc). Unless you upgrade to 4.5, then you can store documents (but I think you need Docs To Go Premium...not sure on that one).

This thread will help you get rid of things you don't need/want on your device. Which will also help with your first question above:

Someone else will have to chime in here. I use the standard browser that comes with my Curve, and also use a lot of 'mobile friendly' websites.

Try BBWeather. Go to this site from your BB browser to download it: h t t p : / / w w w . t a t e u . n e t / s o f t w a r e / b b . p h p ? f = B B W e a t h e r
I added all the spaces in there so you can read the URL easier here.
Good luck!

I agree with what Juwaack68 stated. One suggestion on the browser would be to upgrade your OS to version 4.5. The browser is much improved from earlier versions.
I don't know if this will suit your needs, I am not sure what the browser on the touch is like.

And you do not need docs to go premium. After upgrading to 4.5+, there is a free upgrade to the docs to go that will give you (excel) sheets to go. There are some limitations to the free version of the software, but if you expect to read office docs vs. create/modify them extensively then the free version will likely suit your needs.

Thanks guys. I am a bit saddened that I can't store more on the card. On the Touch I could store games and apps right on the card. It seems like this would greatly limit how many apps I can put on the bb.
Thanks for the link to delete things, I will check it out.
Internet Explorer was crap on the Touch, Opera Mini was grand. Opera mini works on the bb, but without the touch screen, it seems slow.
I'll check out that weather app too, thanks for that.
I have been reading about upgrading to 4.5, but since I just got the phone, I figured murphy's law would get me and I would totally screw up the phone somehow. Just nervous about doing it.
Thanks everyone.

Use the steps in the OS upgrade instructions found stickied at the top of the forum and you will be fine.

There's no other browser I'm aware of other that Opera, on the BB. I actually prefer the built-in browser in OS 4.5.

I have found that Opera Mini seems to work better in 4.5. Also the install went flawlessly for me. Just follow the instructions exactly and you will be fine.

The default browser is pretty quick on 4.5 too. I was amazed!
