Default 8GB Media Card only shows 1GB on phone

Please Login to Remove!

I bought a 8gb media card and after formatting it my computer and phone both say I only have 963.5 MB Total Space and Free Space. I have turned off the phone, taken out the battery, reinserted the card...still the same. I connected the phone to my computer, formatted the card from my computer, still only 963.5 MB. Before I formatted the card, it said i had 7.9 GB available. My OS is 4.3. I'm getting really annoyed

Try formatting it with your phone.

I've done it with my phone 3-4 times already. But the first time I think I may have used my computer to format it the first time and might have screwed it up.

Did your format it as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS? Mine is FAT and running full 8.

Its formatted as FAT right now, its weird because I took the media card right out of the package and inserted it into my phone and it said 7.9 GB total space, but after hooking it up to my computer to load things, it only showed 963.5 MB.

How are you "hooking it up to your computer?" Do you have a reader, or are you enabling mass storage and accessing through the BB's connection?

Also, are you doing a "full" format and not a "quick" format?

Stop buying fake Chinese Sandisk cards on ebay!

Not sure what you should do...Maybe a FULL format in NTFS.

It was the Kingston 8Gb Class 4 MicroSDHC card and I got it from Amazon. After talking to the Kingston Rep and running the numbers he said he thinks it might be a counterfeit MicroSD, its so weird though because when I first inserted the card it said 7.9 GB available....

slide it in your card reader on your computer, open the disk and see if any files are in there from the formatting (you may need to enable showing hidden files), delete them if they are present.
Then format the card via your BB.

1) Format it using the phone, not your computer.

2) Try upgrading your phone to OS v4.5.

ps. You said you have OS v4.3. Wasn't there some version of 4.3 where support for 8 GB cards was added? If so, and your version is older, that's probably your problem.

I went through the same thing.

It could be your PC's OS...apparently XP in bone stock form won't recognize SDHC cards (the "high capacity" cards).

There is a patch for it. My PC claimed the patch was already installed via some other update MS pushed but it still wouldn't recognize more than 1GB. I wound up formatting it on the Pearl or the digital camera, I forget which, and now I have 8GB (give or take) on an 8GB card.
