If I am searching an address book to send a message, the following occurs:

Lets say I'm trying to find the name David. After clicking the "compose SMS text", the address book appears as usual. If I try to type David, my phone displays 4avid... and does not come up with any results for "David".. if I use SHIFT+d, I get David...but still no results for "David".. Its as if the first problem causes the second, because if I switch screens then return to the screen with "David" typed in search, "David" will be found. This only happens for the first character, and not when writing a message, etc. I've tried every combination of alt, etc since it obviously seems like it is locked in for the first character input - but it is not.

This problem ONLY occurs on the 4/DF key. If I am trying to text Kristin and type "kristin", the name comes up without inputting a number as the first char instead..

I've tried batt pulls mainly - as that is usually first line defense on a BB...but no luck.

Also, if I am on the home screen, and push the buttons that would spell kristin, it searches "keustin". If I search Dad it finds "4ad"...if I search Jessica it finds Jessiva...... If I search Fred it finds 4114.......

Settings are on SureType when composing a message (I assume suretype is irrelevant when searching a number anyway...I think it just searches and includes all combos, correct?) And anyway...when it does switch from numers to text once keys outside of the numerical keys are depressed - the "jessica" example puts a v in when c would be the first "tap" anyway..


There are no apparent (to me) patterns - which is why I don't know how to type this without being confusing.

Going to try latest OS later today when I don't need the phone...I'm running the second to latest version currently which worked fine until last night. If that fails..I kinda doubt it's the OS..

Anyone have any ideas besides this?

With keyboard problems the first and second suspects are moisture or physical damage. Even a sweaty pocket has been known to do it. How about it?

It's just such a strange problem -- it's consistently inconsistent...so I don't believe there is any physical damage from moisture/etc..but you never know. Hasn't been dropped in the snow, I never used it in the rain, always have clean dry hands when using it...etc etc. and the problem is only when typing a name, address, or number to email/sms/call. Also, whenever I carry the phone around it is in a case, so pocket moisture seems unlikely too.

Moving to the latest OS now... will post results soon!

Loading new OS solved the issue (OS reload probably would have as well).
