Default Memory Problem, looking for suggestions please

Please Login to Remove!

hello all,

I have a Pearl 8130, from Verizon Wireless, running OS 4.5.0.77

I have had it about a year. I have always had memory issues, even from the get go I have never been able to get more than 12mb or so of free memory, and lately, even after a battery pull I am at less than 5, and down to none in no time. It locks all the time and I am now resetting the device through either soft reset or a battery pull several times a day.

I have a few third party apps, but no more than the average user. I see posts on here from people that have more apps than me and more free memory. The phone should be able to handle what I am asking of it, but it seems as if it can not.

over the course of the year I have had the phone, I have read every post I can find on this issue.

As such,
I save no messages
I have no extra themes
I have deleted all the extra languages
I have, in short, followed every tip, trick or tweak I can find and the problem only seems to get worse.

So, if anyone has a suggestion, please let me know, I am looking for some new ideas.

Thanks.

Have you double checked that all ringtones and pictures are not in memory and are on a microSD memory card?

You may just have a bad phone unfortunately and your memory has just been degrading and now hit the bottom.
What third party apps are you running?

Well let's see if we can track down where it went.

Menu>options>Status>Menu>Database Sizes. (Please post)

Do you receive MMS Messages? Some of these can be very large.

I get some MMS messages, but I always delete right away, or so I thought. Looking at this list though, the biggest chunk is in MMS messages and I can not find any on the phone.

Actually you only have one MMS and it's not large. You berry is bare bones. I am guessing there is some third party causing this. Do you have 3rd party themes and if so how many? I realize that you have a Media Card and that you changed settings so that it would save Pics and music to the card but can you check to make sure that it hasn't defaulted back to the device as storage?

I was actually just in a Verizon store on an unrelated matter, mentioned this problem, and they said they would replace the phone under warranty if I wanted to go that route, however I held off for now.

my 3rd party apps are:
Viigo
google mobile
twitterberry
softreset
google talk

Media card support is on
mass storage mode support is on

is this what you mean?

i went through all the items under media, and everything is saved to the card.

As far as being bare bones, I know, I guess thats what I am saying, I have been deleting everything.

as far as third party apps, i listed them above.

i know some apps are big, but the total size of all of them is something on the order of 5 mb, so something somewhere is lurking, or it's defective.

i deleted all 3rd party themes. I also found some old texts lurking, and cleared them out.

that gets me to 7.5 mb free and that is as high as I have been in a long time.

Actually thinking about wiping the phone and starting over, but I can not get it to back up at the moment either.

Did you read the thread from John Clark for the Memory optimization, and you might want to do a full wipe and re-install the OS.

Both Google mobile and Google Talk (I know for sure Google Talk does) always stay open and cause memory leaks.

Thanks, I have tried to make use of that post, just does not seem to free up much memory. I am leaning towards the wipe.

Apparently, they will require that before they replace it under warranty anyway

If they are willing to replace it I would go for it. I know that we are missing something here with how small the databases are. There is something eating up tons of space.

I am going to wipe it first, maybe add the third party apps back one at a time see if I can pinpoint the issue.

I have been through the phone 50 times at least, looking in every nook and cranny I can find for what could be eating the memory. Either the wipe will help, or I will get a new phone.

I do appreciate your time trying to help, and everyone else who made a suggestion. I will post here in a bit and let you know how the wipe went, in case anyone may be interested.

alright, wiped it....reinstalled my address book and calendar items, (nothing else thus far) and am at 21.5 mb, so that is better.

and as a bonus, the wipe did not wipe me back to the original OS, so that helped.

Out of curiosity how did you wipe your device, through Security Options - Wipe device? I am in a very similar situation. My Pearl sits at around 12-13 MB with everything cleaned up but if I start to use it heavily for a day or two it will get down to 5-6 MB free. My problem is I use Linux and cannot use some of the memory cleaning methods described in the tutorial referenced on this site. But I have everything removed that I can and my total in database sizes is only 800k. I just can't find what is taking up everything. I only have the following installed: Gmail, Google Sync, Google Maps and some of the Sprint apps.

Thanks

I was having the same problem with my daughters Pearl and changed Viigo's setting to "close on exit" instead of "running in the background" and that brought the memory from single numbers up to the high teens. It also doesn't slowly decay down to zero now as well.

I had a question also if you or anyone for that matter can tell me what "Content Store" means from the list of data bases and what exactly determines the size of it.

With a Pearl, I have had major problems with Viigo. After getting a new device with 4.5 OS loaded, the only 3rd party app I installed was Viigo. It started continously rebooting, to the point where the device was unuseable. I could not even get back into it. With support on the phone for a while and they decided to ship me a new one.

Same thing, with OS 4.5, installed Viigo and the thing started rebooting constantly, support sent me a new device.

I would consider removing Viigo if you can.
