Default Why switch to "Loader.exe" for upgrading an OS vs. Desktop Manager?

Please Login to Remove!

hi, I was on 4.5.0.81 til today, and am in the process of upgrading to .102. I noticed that up to .81, it was the same old process and you'd use Desktop Manager to upgrade, but as of .99, you are now suggested to use the Loader.exe program in the same folder as the vendor.xml file.

Why the change?

Good question. I don't have an answer, but I like the change. I've formatted my "Curve" and two other "Curves" this week, and in all three cases, they took less time than my "Pearl" has in the past. 'Could be the difference in models, but I doubt it.

Loader doesn't check the Vendor.XML file, and doesn't get all hung up with the wireless upgrading that has been problematic to some.

The main problem on latest Desktop manager software (4.7) its a "feature" that check for new specific carrier software for your phone (using a hidden vendor.xml that its downloaded to your pc), so when you connect your phone the desktop manager software, it checks for software updates, and then install and remove all the software that its or isn't for your carrier.

I have a 8100, at the time i upgrade my desktop software to 4.7 this problem pops up.
I tried to reinstall the desktop software and unchecked the automatics update feature but only work for once, a after the first use of the desktop software the problem appears again.

I switch to Loader.exe. i like it, but im was missing the desktop software.
So I move back to desktop software version 4.5 with no problem at all.
I'm currently using desktop software 4.5_b016.

All of the above ^^.

We purposefully changed the directions in all of the upgrade threads here to simplify the process and relieve several issues users were having in upgrading.

You can still have Desktop Manager installed--it's needed for manual backup/restores and syncing.. Loader.exe is just the basic loader and as stated above doesn't get into all that online updating business and there are just fewer problems all around. Loader.exe has always been available. You do still have to remove the vendor.xml file if the OS isn't from your carrier.

OK, then, I have a question on the same topic, sort of.

I have a friend who owns a Curve (8320) with 4.3xxx OS and no WiFi. Does OS 4.5.0.110 install WiFi capability, or is that a hardware specific issue? I think he's with Verizon.

The curve 8320 has WiFi, at any OS level.

If he is with Verizon, he very likely doesn't have the 8320, but probably the 8330--which doesn't have WiFi.

Look at Options > About for the model, or the white sticker under the batter.

Thanks, J, I'll get it figured out, just thought I'd ask.

I'll see Brandon next week, and will have my laptop with me to do the deed at the time.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

If he's with Verizon he for sure doesn't have the 8320.

I understand. I'll just find the correct OS when I get there. Thanks.
