Default QWERRTYUIOP & BB buttons don't work - 03-08-2009, 11:39 PM

Does anybody have any suggestions?
New Keypad?
Main Board?
Is Verizon a better carrier than AT&T?

Greetings and welcome to the BBForums.

Normally such symptons are indicative of moisture damage.

Dry it out, first. Remove the battery now... and:

Your carrier question can only be determined by yourself for who has the best coverage where you live, work and play.

Actually it did not get wet, the BB button started to go away then the qwerty row would work and then not work.
Now nothing!

Still, sounds like moisture damage.

Not to argue, but do you know how many users in this forum with over 300,000 members and 1.2 million posts we have seen with similar issues, come to find out it really is moisture damage. Note, I did not say your BB got wet, I said moisture damage.

That could come from a very steamy bathroom during a hot shower, which is why I said take the battery and out and follow the suggestions in the link. IF it is moisture damage, leaving the battery in only adds to the issue IF it is moisture.

If it's not, then you're still safe.

In these instructions the T-6 driver does not appear to be used.
Am I missing something?
If it is not used I can do this later today.
Thanks,
Larry

No, the important part is to get it on a warm dry area like the top of a cable box, or in a box or dry rice.

I don't think you really need to disassemble it, the instructions say it is not required.

I have dried out a few BlackBerrys in my time, and only one time did I disassemble one for this process.

I've been having a similar problem with the end key not being fully responsive for quite a while now. It was definitely moisture damage because I left it in a bathroom while taking a hot shower multiple times. My question is will disassembling and drying it still help the problem even after about 2 months of having this problem?

It could, but much less likely. When moisture dries, it leave a mineral or salt buildup on the key contact.

Replacing your keyboard *might* work.

But you can try the drying out first.

Thanks for the advice. Don't really feel like buying a new keyboard as this isn't much of a problem. Going to try to disassemble, let it dry, and blow it off with the computer duster things. Hope that works

Thanks...
Oh yeah, the number 5 key, when in internet browser mode, will pull up shortcuts...

The number 5 key pulls up the media net & BB shortcuts that normally would have been pulled up with the BB key.
As well as "qwertyuiop" row of keys not working at all.
It did not do this previously so I figured this info would help in the trouble shooting of this specific issue.
Any suggestions?

So have you had it drying out all this time, NO battery inserted, in a box of rice or in a dry warm area as recommended?

It is sitting on top of my desktop computer (no battery) that is in its little enclosure in my desk...
How long do you think it should be there?
Thanks,
Larry

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Larry

first of all, i joined the forum specifically because i found this thread. i am having the exact same problem wiht my 8100 pearl, the qwertyuiop and BB keys don't work at all. everything else works perfectly.
here's some background information:
about a month ago i spilled a drink on my pearl and didn't take out the battery right away. i tried turning it on in the morning and most of the keys were messed up. i gave up on the phone, took the battery out and just left it in my drawer until about five days ago when i decided to give it another try. well everythign seemed to be working fine except for the top row of keys (qwertyuiop) and the BB key. i opened up my pearl and cleaned the keyboard and everything else really with some rubbing alcohol real well. as soon as i put it back together everythign was working perfectly! but my phone was only like this for a few days before the qwertyuiop and BB keys stopped working completely. i've tried cleaning it again and taking it apart, i just don't know what to do any more. would installing or upgrading the OS fix this?any suggestions ? and again sorry for the long post

Good luck I called AT&T I can get a new one for $15 and then have to extend my contract 2 more years...
I will wait for a few more months and get a new one at Verizon free...
Have been using the euro for an E zero for the O and a small L for the i...
Pain but it will get better when i get the new one plus $5 a month for replacement guarantee...
I found no fix..I even cut the membrane on one button under the keypad and cleaned that...still N/G
