suretype in 8100 when spelling a name to call right from a menu screen? -

when I had a 8120, i could just start typing a contact name in a menu screen, and it was always in suretype mode (to spell "dash" i pushed 4??5)
now i am on 8100, and if i for any reason leave it in multitap mode after sms, the suretype stops working in menu screen, so to spell "dash" i have to type 4, ?, wait, ??, 55.
very annoying. in 8120 it did not matter if i typed last message in multitap mode, the suretype was ALWAYS working while typing contacts from a manu screen.
any workaround?
