Default Headphone jack

Can the headphone jack be used instead of the ear piece on the 8100 for telephone calls? I tried plugging headphones in, but there was no sound in the headphone and sound was still coming from the internal ear piece. In a noisy area like an airline terminal it would nice to be able to use headphones.

Just a simple set, more ear buds than headphones, that I bought at Radio Shack. They work fine with a small radio I have.
