Carrier: Vodafone NZ
Default OS: 8130 4.5.0.293/4.5.0.173 (Multilanguage) ESN - 10-30-2009, 04:33 PM

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.293 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.5.0.293
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.5.0.173
Software Platform: 3.4.0.55
File name: 8130AMEA_PBr4.5.0_rel293_PL3.4.0.55_A4.5.0.173_Sas kTel.exe
File size: 88.01MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8130:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

How to determine if you have an ESN or MEID based device.
From the main menu, select Options, then select Status.
ESN devices - On the Status screen you will see ESN on the display
MEID devices – On the Status screen you will see MEID on the display.
NOTE – You cannot install ESN-based software on a MEID device, nor can you install MEID-based software on an ESN device. They are NOT interchangeable.

i'm quite amazed RIM is actually working on new OS's for legacy models like this.

BB Wishlist:
-Gmail BIS integration with an effective 2-way read/unread sync solution
-Better integrated alarm (on legacy devices)
-Threaded SMS

I'm going to resist the temptation this time. Hopefully, this release is not nearly as laden with bugs and I can eventually update to it.

if anything, they should be doing it more and better! Really, it allows users to refresh their experience with the product much more easily than the iphone. Much better than having to think that my hardware is obsolete 3 months after I buy it.

Alright time to update my 8130 again maybe this will hold me off till I save some cash for an upgrade. As much as I love this phone its not gonna hold up for much longer; time for a Tour.

Anyone installed it yet? Any bugs?

Went ahead and installed it, working very well and opened a huge amount of memory on my system went from 12xxxxxx to 17

Only complaint was that my calendar was transferred back under the same default. In fact it was just a generic "default" calendar that couldn't be selected to be displayed on the main screen and I couldn't change the entries.

Installed two days ago, no problems so far. Have not yet had any "chirping" on phone calls, but seems to have a memory leak. Lost about a Meg per day...
