My suggestion is do your homework. Go to the RIM site and compare the GSM models. Then go to your carrier's store and look at the various models available and see which you like.
Some people like SureType, others do not and refer QWERTY. Make sure you play with both before you buy.
Make sure you know the costs involved. You will need a bB data plan which ads about $30 a month to the voice package. You may also need a text messaging plan. So there are a lot of things to consider.
Those ending in "30" (i.e. 8130, 8230, etc.) are CDMA and will work only on Verizon and Sprint.
Read the FAQ article posted by aiharkness, above. Good info there on buying any used BB, on ebay or from other sources/friends. Also peruse the 8100 and 8200 sections here in the Forum.
