Default problems with 'find' function in address book

Please Login to Remove!

All of a sudden the 'find' function doesnt work properly

here is a breakdown
1) I know the address book entries are there as I can see them when I scroll down manually
2) when I type 2-3 letters of the desired search name i get all entries matching those letters
3) when I continue to type more letters the desired search results from address book 'disappear' even though they match the 'find' criteria

EXAMPLE
when searching for 'halpern' in address book

entering find : hal

displays names beginning with
* gal
* hal

HOWEVER
entering find : halp ( adding 'p')
severely LIMITS results
(* in this case not Halpern but only an entry "Galpert')

it makes no difference whether i search by last name or first name

did not change anything on the blackberry other than deleting a few category entries . This problem seems global unrelated to the deletion of categories since entires unrelated to those categories are affected

options under address book and options/language seem to be correct

would appreciate any informed feedback
by the way over 3000 entries in address book

Wirelessly posted (The Dacia Sandero of data plan)

As a first step, have you tried a battery pull?

yes
tried battery pull

as far as i can tell any attempt to manage 'categories' ( one of the fields in the address book database) corrupts the address book or at least the index used for searching
