Interesting - it's like the purposely left out the thumbwheel so that the market would only appeal to consumer market, and the enterprise market would carry on the 87xx and the 71xx. This phone is def. a consumer phone, which is why suretype is used. I'd be pretty surprised if the 87xx got a camera - and if it did, if the size/shape/colour would be dramatically changed to be able to tell...

This phone doesn't have any signature Blackberry trademarks on it - it stands out.

Cheers.

I just hope that's it's easily unlockable like the other BlackBerries from Cingular and T Mobile. This way I don't have to wait for the Rogers version.

Lightbulb 8100 BES Features/Abilities on OS 4.2?! - 08-10-2006, 04:38 AM

@BoyGenius ... the features of this device is what I've been preaching over a year ago since I joined when nay sayers were scolding me that it wont happen. I'm more interested in how SP2 enables the admins on the BES4.1 to lock down these new features.

a) seperate email attachment service enabling/dis-abling (picture/audio attachment seperate from ALL attachment ability or specifically camera attachment ability.

b) locking down the memory card writing/reading from a single service book; more specifically the ability to find out ANY new additions to the memory card EVEN though the users service book was admin'd from the BES Administrator to disable the users use of it. Remember memory card reader/writers are commonplace with USB adaptions.

I'm seriously surprised that GPS wasnt built in with some kind of API or service book that is network enabled to engage a specific Service Book that is distance related .... ie allowing the camera and MiniSD card slot (with limitations I mentioned for the MiniSD slot in "b" above) to be 'enabled' while say 2 miles away from the office, and 'disable' while within that range of the office. hmm say about 500meters? Now this would work even if the device was turned OFF because when its turned on it cycles the OS .. then connects to the network - not quite giving you access to the menu> and BAM these cool features are locked to protect sensitive internal corporate data.

I'm asking this because the SE P990i is the closing thing with built-in BB Connect to match this 8100's abilities ... size and dimensions are a different matter.

Right but your forgetting it is not built-in GPS, it has support you need an external bluetooth GPS module, and I am sure there will be tracking abilities OEM or aftermarket. to both your point a. , and b. you are correct those will be controllable all thru service books. I was the one that was arguing about a camera on here for forever, I wanted one personally and got shut down everytime I said they are coming out with one. THERE WILL NEVER BE A BLACKBERRY WITH A CAMERA OH MY GOD MY LIFE IS OVER MY BOSS HATES ME THE DOG KNOWS THERES A CAMERA I CANT COME TO WORK HELP ME. No shut the hell up. CAMERA BERRY BABY!

Cingular Product road map hahahaha.thats a good one.The ipaq 6900-edge series was 100% coming to cingular and should have been released over a month ago by cingular yet they failed. This ipaq model is wide open for sale yet cingular is not up to take the chance in investment of the device because of there new network with 3g capability.Im not trying to be a smart ...... but just giving you the facts about cingulars postion. They want 3G device on there network for edge will be a thing of the past point blang-bottom line
So dont get lost on that road map they have been giving there customers in the past 6 months

Ill bet you $1,000 right now, put your money where your big mouth is we have witnesses, 5,920 to be exact. You have 8 posts homie, you think you know something show some proof. Cingular has 2 3G phones on the network and around 30 Markets with 3G, wow that makes sense. NOT

First off, there is NO standard called G4 in the wireless industry. There is a VERY recent 4G technology standard, but that does not stand to be released into a production-ready market for another FOUR years (2010 for the math-impaired) - that is in Japan by NTT DoCoMo. If the North American market keeps pace the way it has for the last decade and a half, expect to see 4G in the United States by 2012 or 2013 (this is assuming that NTT actually has it released by that time).

What Sprint may actually be rolling out, and what Verizon already recently rolled out in their major markets, is the 'upgrade' to 1xEV-DO, called Rev A. This will allow for the theoretical speeds of 3.1mbps downstream and 1.8mpbs return - not much of an increase on the down, but QUITE a bit on the up (although really... is there any need?)...

And as far as 3.1mbps comparing to 54mpbs found in WiFi, I'd have to say that there is no comparison ...at all. And in comparison to the 802.11n WiFi standard, I'd have to just laugh (really, REALLY hard).

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

Sorry, jibi, but Sprint CEO Gary Forsee begs to differ with you:

The "4G" (fourth-generation) network will launch by the end of 2007, Forsee said.
And unless you're going to call the CEO of Sprint "math-impaired", note he says that rollout will launch in late 2007 and be completed in late 2008, not the 2012 or 2013 that you said. And he *did* refer to it as "4G", so don't fault posters here with calling it 4G and quoting dates much earlier than you argued.

@DallasFlier, I tend to side with Jibi on his opinion of 4G.

Just do a quick Wiki search and you'll see no HUGE mention that its defined by WiMax ... that press announcement was for stock holders and contracted manufacturers alike. Its the choice Sprint is going with late next year. Still, its interesting that Verizon is ahead with EVDO rev. A while Sprint is just beginning to launch.

Eitherway back on topic.

Thanks Boy Genius; I do remember you beginning the want/need for Camera on a BlackBerry ... I joined in with my own beliefs as I thought it could simply be handled by service books administered by the BES. I was hoping for internal gps (I actually hate the technology; as I'd have NO use for it), as it doesnt add a huge cost to end users data plans.

Speaking of which do you hear any word of Rogers Wireless getting the 8100 & reducing their expensive data plans?!

aye. i don't consider the Wi-Fi extensions as a 'generation' in cellular technology. if they want to role it out as such, then i suppose it's up to them to call it by same name. however, and once again, we're alienating cellular standards for the sake of VERY little gain in speeds (2-3mpbs range real-world). in terms of cellular 4G, we'll see it implemented in Japan first, then Korea (or at the same time), then the CDMA networks here.

He's correct. Sprint is releasing WiMAX by the end of 2007 and 2008 and calling it a 4G initiative. In the traditional sense of cellular generation conventions, they are incorrect in doing so. But if the industry is evolving, then by all means.

Well, side with who you will, but the CEO of a major cellular carrier is a fairly good source to quote - arguably better than any poster on an internet forum, with all due respect to jibi here. And as for your contention regarding Wiki and WiMax references, you didn't look very carefully, did you?

jibi, you're also a bit outdated on the info you quote regarding NTT DoCoMo and their rollout of 4G:

Go figure. The 4G standard that DoCoMo will be rolling out has yet to even be finalized, but okie dokes... spectrums were still up in the air and a few other lasting things, last I looked. Possibly not deal-breakers, so I guess your article may be right. Been a while since I've looked at it, as we won't be seeing that side of 4G for a while, imo.

Yep, definitely agree on that - even if DoCoMo begins rollout by yearend in Japan, we won't see *that* 4G technology here for "a while", as you say.

Well, I didn't check eBay, but before posting that message I doublechecked the Plantronics website to make sure I hadn't missed something, and there's no such thing on their own website, which should be a better source than eBay. <shrug>

Thanks, I stand corrected. How did you find that page on the Plantronics site? I went to "Mobile" then to "Bluetooth" where it supposedly lists all the Bluetooth headsets, and its not there.

Looking at the specs, I'm thinking this doesn't look like any improvement at all over my 645. Only the cosmetics have changed, and it ships with a lot less flexibility in terms of attachments for charging options.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I've been waiting for a device like this....I haven't made the jump to the 8700 because I figured something else would come out. The question was asked about the phone reception and clarity but it was never answered. Is the phone on the 8100 as clear as the 8700?

Wiki 4G article
Wow, I guess this is a day of DAMN I stand corrected; but only half way in this case. The shear numbers doesnt give WiMax much of a chance.

# TD-SCDMA - 100 million subscribers (in China) by 2010
# Flash-OFDM - 13 million subscribers in 2010

Thats quite a bit more than 7.2 million units by 2010; and again that doesnt mean subscribers ... so this is a skewed number that will be split by providers offering it to physically stationed consumers as alternative to Cable/DSL Internet axis, etc NOT only for cellular providers ... so I'm sorry Sprint is the only one officially announcing it thus far from what I can remember.

Things change though. We all didnt expect HSDPA this quick 3-4 yrs ago.

Well, its true we BETTER win the North this year, that I'll agree with. As for laughing, I understand that standards and expectations are a little higher for us than for you. After all, Nebraska has won FIVE National Championships since the last time Auburn won one (their only one, 1957 was it? Since I was a 3 year old tyke at the time, I confess I don't remember THAT far back.)

Seeing as I have both in front of me, I would suggest you rethink your sarcastic comments...
